AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

I've got an i9 14900K just now, would it be much of an upgrade to get the Ryzen 7 9800X3D for a new build?
In my uneducated opinion I would say the difference wouldn't be enough (for me) to make the (at least) £700 change. Of course that depends on your circumstances. Is there a game or scenario where you feel the 14900K isn't doing it for you?

The 14900K has been great for me so far, at this point it's purely for gaming. I have the 57" Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 so trying to get a system that can get as many frames as possible on that monitor.

My Mrs is wanting a desktop to replace her laptop so I'd at least be giving her the i9 for that if I do change to AMD.

Before posting, I've done quite a bit of Googling and browsing through forums, but I'm looking for another opinion.

I recently picked up a Fractal Lumen S28 cooler for my 9800X3D processor. The idle temperatures range between 52 to 60 degrees Celsius, fluctuating within that range every 8 seconds. Once the pump kicks in at 60 degrees, the temperature drops to the low 50s.

Under Cinebench load, the temperatures rises into the 70s, so I'm not too concerned about that.

I've cleaned off the thermal paste and reapplied a pea-sized amount, as well as reseated the cooler, but I'm still experiencing the same results.

Running ASrock X870e Nova. (One BIOS version back)

What are your thoughts?

70s is fine

if its a closed loop water cooler pump needs to be running all the time imo, otherwise its just heating the water in place
change the fan curve so its running tick over at idle
i did get the cpu last week and idle is 35 to 40c with 420mm AIO
prime 95 load was about 75c at stock

OK so been playing Space Marine 2 which is a very CPU demanding game.

My frames are generally good mostly 100 with dips to 80ish.

I see peaks in CPU usage up to around 60-65% and lowest GPU usage can go down to around 80% although mostly 90% +.

I really don't know if that means I am CPU bottlenecked or not...

CPU never hits 100% for example.

On the other hand if I stop monitoring my performance I'd probably just be happy to play the game... but the upgrade is in the back of my mind.

On average how much performance uplift can I expect in games coming from a 5900x to 9800x3D?

Depends on GPU and what resolution and settings you play at. Anywhere from sizeable to minor but not insignificant as it will help with the minimum FPS a bit even in situations where the average might not be massively different.

Sorry I should’ve mentioned currently on a 6800XT at 3440x1440p, but I’m going to build a new a new PC and give this one to my son, will likely buy a 9070XT depending on reviews and price etc

If you have someone to give the 14900K and you have the money available then do it, why not?

Thanks @DanielSon @jonneymendoza.

It's more idle, which I'm slightly concerned about. 57-61 seems a little on the high from what I've seen?

I also have this annoying radiator noise at 60c that the Fractal Lumen makes. On the Lumen they moved the pump to the Radiator and the noise is clearly coming from that.

Performance seems in line with other 9800X3D's. Bit annoying losing that multi-core performance coming from a 7900X but the single core is a decent bit better.

Did that loss of multi core performance actually make any difference in your real time use, other than noting it on a benchmark.?

Understanding that you have just got it :)

All the best with your x3d build

I collected my 9800X3D and motherboard yesterday. Spent last night swapping it into my rig. I downloaded Ryzen master to see about setting a wee overclock. I just did the Auto OC option then ran a Cinebench test for a wee bit. On a 360 AIO the CPU hit 95 degrees after a couple of minutes. Is this normal/ok?

Also, why is it a faff to get the CPU temperatures to show on MSI afterburner?

I really hate the CPU market in general in this respect - there are very few CPUs which are actually in a good place in terms of the balance of single core, multi core, gaming vs productivity performance and price point.
