AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

I just did a Total War Warhammer 3 benchmark at max settings 4k and it didn't drop below 71fps and stayed on an average of 90+... it chewed through it no problems and pretty sure its a good deal faster than my 5800x3D which averaged around 70fps or so and dropped to 50 or maybe a bit less during the heaviest scenes. It was buttery smooth.
What setting do you need to go into for that 200mhz thing
I wrote which settings you can google many guides just search for "9800x3d overclock bios pbo" and you will see youtube video etc.

Is 4.94GHz normal all core 100% on a stock 9800x3d?

What should it achieve with a gentle undervolt?

I see online people claim the CPU boosts to 5.2GHz out of the box.

Mine doesn’t!
9800X3D is 5.2Ghz out of the box,check in AMD site.

About the overclok: put manual 5400 and try to find the minimum voltage which the cpu need to be stable (normaly around 1.20-1.25v), without PBO and curve bulshits. For me this is the best way to overclok CPU.
99.9% from 9800x3d can work on 5.4Ghz.

I did Curve Optimiser as -30 and have had no issues during gaming and did the same as 200 on PBO
Ok thanks, I just rebooted at -30 and did a test of Total War Warhammer Battle and Campaign benchmarks. it maxed out at 89.3c under full 100% load with my Noctua DH-15, but was otherwise stable. This system feels a lot more performant than my 5800x3D did, I am happy I did the upgrade! :)

My next test will be to see if I can get the memory down to Cl26. :D

Nice, glad its stable.

I just watched a YouTube video of someone doing this which seems pretty standard for a 9800X3D.

Some said they where able to go to -40 but I started with a -30 and had no issues so left it there.

You’ll want to run cinebench multicore for 30 mins to ensure stability. If it passes that you should be good to go.

I’m not familiar with the Warhammer total war benchmark but I assume this is to deliberately stress the cpu? I only say this as 80s during ‘typical gaming’ would be hot for the 9800x3d.

Yep, its just to put the CPU at 100% load for a short time to see if any immediate instabilities arise. I generally don't bother with running long torture tests, if its game stable thats fine for me as that by far the most stress my CPU is put under! :D

The idea of doing it for a longer duration is that a shorter stress test might not pick up an existing live instability. It’s like playing a lottery that you don’t want to win and doing the test for longer ‘buys more tickets’ so you can be more certain that you don’t win / it’s all good.

Even if you only game, you don’t want to be in the middle of a game and have your session spontaneously crash on you, that can be really annoying! So IMO it’s well worth running a test whilst your doing something else / cooking or whatever. Nothing lost.
 
Swapped to the 9800X3D Saturday night, had a issue where EXPO wouldn't apply but after installing latest bios EXPO worked, tested it yesterday and had 0 issues so far.

Ok fine, fine... just completed a run of Cinebench R23, no errors and all seems stable. :D:

Multicore test score: 1353.
Single core test score: 138

My temps were averaging 91c max in my enclosed case and from my searching on Reddit this seems pretty common for air cooling. https://www.reddit.com/r/AMDHelp/comments/1gs0mys/are_these_temps_normal9800x3d/

I am idling at 49c in an enclosed case so I am confident the cooler is mounted well. I think these things just run really hot on air.

Sounds good! Just double checking, you don’t just want to do a single multicore run as that’s only about 8 minutes or so. You specifically want to set the 30 minute ‘stress test’ option that should be available as a drop down.

When you get round to sorting your RAM timings and playing with the infinity fabric (if you haven’t done this yet), I’d highly recommend the AIDA cpu + RAM stress tests as that’ll throw up any major instabilities within minutes. Although I did once only get an error 2 hours in, d’oh.

I think I’m running a -20 all core offset with the +200 boost. From memory it gets up the late 80s in Cinebench which is as extreme as it’ll ever go. So long as you’re not in the 80s when gaming then you’re all good :)

Your target for adjusting ram is to get latency down to around 70n/s in AIDA. You can give it a run with your expo settings and see whether it’s worth it or not. Some people can get it down into the 50s… I couldn’t, 70ns will have to do!

Thanks mat ebut I honestly cant be arsed to run the 30 minute test (im working next to the PC and the fan noise in torture tests is annoying), if it does 10 mins thats fine by me for now.

AIDA64 also costs money, is there no free version?

@Richdog I’m not sure, I just paid. I think there is a trial version but I’m not sure what that gives you. The trial version should show your latency score IIRC.

Out of the box mine boosts to 4.94GHz. After enabling PBO +200 it hits 5.2GHz.

This was the same story with my 5800x3d. Only using -15 co did it hit it's max clocks.
