AMD Socket 939 X2 4600 back in stock at only £119.99+VAT !!

Not really seeing the point in buying these if you're going to overclock. For less money you can get an Opteron 165/170 which will probably clock better and has 1MB cache/core.

I have an Opteron 165 in one of my PC's and it maxes out at 2.5Ghz. That's probably because it's in an ASRock 939Dual motherboard. The board hits 270 plus FSB with ease, but the x9 multiplier means the CPU speed is limited. I nearly bought one of the DFI RD200 boards when they were on special at £30 plus vat, but now DFI street is shut down I'm glad I missed the chance!

So I've bought one of these 4600's and will swap the 165 into my nForce 3 rig which is running an old 3500+ Winchester @ 2.6. This way I might get both of my rigs closer to the 3 Gig mark, and, more importantly, they will both be dual core.

That's the thing with the multis, a 4600+ has 12 which means 250x12 as opposed to a 165 which only has 9 which means 333x9 which on most boards isn't possible. The 170 only has 10 which means 300x10 which again, on most boards, isn't possible. Most boards can reach 250 without a problem, most memory can reach 250 without a problem (i can get 320 out of mine on a good day as long as CPU multi is way down (at about 7)).

In games like UT2004, if you're adding 64 bots (start with 32 and then add another 32 in console once game has started) then clock speed is all that matters (even if a 1ghz can just run 32 bots with the occasional lag). Same idea with HL2 and GMod in Particular (if you've spawned like 100 NPC's that are gonna be fighting, then a 3Ghz dual core is gonna be better than a 2.5Ghz Dual core).

Any idea of how quickly these are selling at? Want to wait till Thursday if I can, so that I'm home on Friday to sign for it. :)

Arrrgghhhh!!!

After months of waiting, searching and deliberating, I've just sourced and ordered an Opty 165...!!

Have I done the right thing or would I be better off getting shot of the Opty and buying one of these?

Hi there

Well demand is unreal, sold 200pcs over the weekend and a further 100 today. Can only get another 200pcs with us for tomorrow and at the moment cannot source any more. Buy now to definetely secure one as these things can be very hard to find.

On a positive side we just sourced a load of Athlon 4000's OEM at a great price, see our website for these.

Plus I have found some X2 4800 retail chips, which are not so cheap but still a bargain!!

200 over the weekend! Wow! I must've been one of first to order then! And yeah, i just saw about the ETA on the 4800's. 11/01/2007. And the price: approx £190. They're gonna sell like hotcakes dipped in honey and smothered in chocolate :D. If i'd have had the extra money and patience to wait, i'd have got one of them instead. But ce la vie.

And can we please get a sample stepping (even better just give us all of the writing on top of the IHS) from those that went on sale a few days ago? I wanna research OC's for them.

If I hadn't bought a New OEM x2 4800+ for £200 Between Xmas and New Year I would have got one of these instead.

Still don't know if the x2 4800 was worth the extra £80 compared to the cheap price for this x2 4600 here?

Suppose I could always auction the 4800+ instead (saw one go for almost £300 last week) and get the 4600 from here to use instead and pcoket some cash to go towards a new monitor so I have duals.

Hi there

Just found another 500 and took them. Seems nowhere in Europe has any now, shall start looking in the far east next to see if I can grab more. Damn these are popular and its gotta be to do with the release of Vista in the pipeline so everybody is going dual core to enhance Vista performance. :)

Should work fine. BIOS update at worst case.

Awww, the price on these things has gone up by about £12. :(

Still good decent value I know, but I liked the other price more!

Ah well, might order mine tonight then, lest it jumps another tenner!

Don't have to worry anymore about not being at home during the day this week at least - found out earlier on that we've got no lectures and seminars for the next two weeks, because other courses have exams (although we don't). Quite happy, although it would have been nice to have been told sooner! :)

About £10 sooner i bet. Looks like they're gonna make a right bomb on this lot! So nowhere in the whole of EU is likely to have them? Wow! :P to Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, but most of all, to france. :P

AMD must be running really low then. These could be the last 4600+ 939's we see people. Get 'em while you can! (now i sound like i'm advertising for OCUK).

any recommendations on fsb/ multiplier settings?

currently (as you can see 285/10x)

Hmm maybe you've just got a chip that doesn't clock very well? :( I know I've only got a x2 3800 but I managed to get it to 2.5GHz from 2GHz before I had to give it anymore volts.

Although saying that I see you've got the same mobo as mine, albeit not the 'deluxe' version. If it has the same 'vcore overvolt' option as mine does, it might not be giving the chip as much juice as it reckons. Mine was supposed to be running at 1.4V + 200mv but on Sandra, CPUZ etc etc I don't think I ever saw it report the vcore as 1.6v, not once!

EDIT: At all the people considering the x2 4600, get an opty! Bound to clock better on stock volts methinks.
