AMD to Celebrate 30 Years of Graphics: Webcast and new product reveal.

Corrected the list of the 10 reasons to get a 285. From my passing knowledge of AMD's line-up, I am fairly sure all these are available on the 280.

10. DX12 + Mantle
9. Powertune
8. GCN
7. Cool 3rd party cards.
6. Trueaudio
5. Eyefinity
4. Free sync
3. Performance
2. Price $249. So probably £239 :D.
1. Free games. Alien isolation and Star Citizen added to Never Settle.

Only the 260X and 290/X support true audio, so the 285 adds that. Also the 285 doesn't need the bridge for xfire (like the 290/X). But those are the only things it's actually adding to the 280/X, and then it looks like it perform the same or worse and consumes the same power (or a tiny bit less).

So it adds nothing at all that doesn't exist on at least one other card, and doesn't even bother trying to challenge maxwell (the 750/Ti) in efficiency.

I was hoping for more.

1,792 Stream Processors
918 MHz GPU Clock
3.29 TFLOPS peak performance
112 Texture units
32 ROPs
2GB GDDR5
256-bit memory bus
5.5 GHz memory clock
2x 6-pin power connectors
190 watt TDP
$249 MSRP

lol that is replacing the 280 at the same price and with 256/2gb?

only thing that event showed me is AMD might be an option as their prices are very good. (even though i want NVidia for Witcher 3....

To those questioning the 2GB/256bit bus, the 285 is a new mid range part. Last gen if you wanted to play high res/4k, the 7970 was it, the max AMD offered. Now the 290/x takes that top spot why would they churn out chips that are less capable, more expensive to produce, more expensive for consumers to buy and less likely to be used for high res with the bigger bus? Sure it would be nice but makes little economic sense.

Yeah, tho they come in 2GB and 4GB variants, we will have to wait and see how they actually perform.
Going simply from the specifications it looks like its about 15% slower than the 280 given that the 384Bit Bus is 30% wider and actually adds about 15% to the performance from the 256Bit Tahiti LE to the 384Bit Tahiti Pro.

But its not Tahiti, its a smaller Hawaii which is a more powerful architecture, 8 Ace Units vs 2 and 4 Triangles per clock vs 2.

I believe the 670 and 680 did too back at the time (guessing the 760 and 770 do too, but I've not looked).

If it performs better than the 280/280X despite this then I guess it makes sense.
Free-sync may well be a benefit for, what I'm assuming, is a mid-range part that quite possibly will see the sort of framerates that 'free-sync' will help with. Does of course require a new monitor and if you've got that sort of money to throw around maybe you'd consider a 290?
TrueAudio may be a plus but we need to give it a bit more time to see if it's used much. If it's used as much as PhysX then maybe it's a factor, less than that then maybe not so much.

So you are fine paying the same price for inferior spec.

Mostly neutral as prices will fall. Besides being gcn 1.1 its exact performance is unknown. Stuff like true audio, freesync, bridgless crossfire, are also specification improvements. Not to forget proper mantle support as much as that counts.

The 285 will be a decent mid range card for those that game at 1080P and lower. Price is a little high in truth but it will settle.

true audio would work, if AMD manages to put it on most competitive FPS type games or survival like dayz, warz etc, not everyone can put 150 bucks on a surround 7.1 headset.
still huge issue for ppl wanting to get ready for 4k, both amd and nvidia sticking to 256 bit, guess they are not planning to push for 4k untill 20nm

Really cant wait for Star Wars + Mantle wounder when we get to see gameplay.

Word. For me every Mantle title is still a must buy just for the fact i love to compare it to DX11 and remind myself why gaming is superior on Mantle. Mantle fanboy and proud of it.

But you'd be better off buying a 280 or a 280X. I think that's the main disappointment. 280 is £50 cheaper for roughly the same perf. 280X is the same price but better perf.

If it had Maxwell-like efficiency it would have a place. But it doesn't even do that.

Interested to see Dragon Age under Mantle. Or just in general really

Agreed, I used to love COH type games so I'm quite keen to give that a try. I just hope they include some in game benchmark that represents performance in game. Showcase Mantle, showcase the performance benefits it offers over DirectX. I'll be sure to do a bench thread if they include it. I've been badgering one of the devs about it for a while, but he wouldn't comment on it. I suspect it's unlikely. :(

Agreed but there won't be an option for that when stock has all gone :(
