AMD To Launch RV770 On June 18th

I am looking to build for the last month, and was told to wait for these new cards.

I originally wanted the PowerColor ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 "Special Edition" 1024MB - Is the replacement going to be the R700 is Radeon HD 4870 X2? And thats not going to be out until August or maybe later, right?

Same here, getting irritated about it now :P

If that is true, we may still see it at £199 (if my math is correct) which is what I was gunning for all along. I'd be fine with £225ish though :) Assuming it performs. Isnt it like 30% quicker than the 4850?

Martyn

There's already listings of it for £205 (260 euro). With this price drop, it'll most probably come in at around £160-180.

Depends how you define 'replacement'.

The 4870 should offer superior performance to the 3870x2, using only a single GPU. This is obviously preferable for any number of reasons.

The true 'replacement', in terms of product lineup, will be the r700 4870x2 which won't be available until around August.

I'd hold off for just one more week and see what the 4870 has to offer.

Hmmmmm

2X 4870 @ £400

or

1X GTX280 @ £400

I don't understand why people are making up these prices?

Does the happenings of the last round not mean anything? No card above $499, and since they said that their cards have been inline with it.

By the time the 4870X2 is ready to come out, the 4870 will have dropped in price slightly to line up with it, ending up around 60% of the X2's price.

it's what happened last round, there isn't any reason to think otherwise. It's like with the 4850, people were saying it'll be about £150-160.

We don't get ripped off that bad with graphics cards (lately anyway), it's usually just the same price + VAT.

I've said this a good few times before, but we got the 3870X2 at less than the US price excluding VAT.

As it stands, both NV and ATi have sold their cards over here for the same price (give or take 5%) with VAT then added on.

Ah, so it would be wise to get the 4870 comming out next week, which is or should perform same or better than the 3870x2 and is cheaper.... :)

From one of the leaked reviews, the 4850 is using about 10% more power than a 3870. It was that french (I think) review/preview.

How can it get away with using a single slot cooler then? All the 3870s had double slot coolers.

Anyone know how many power connecters are required for the 4870?

Yep. Also remember that with the single GPU you avoid the various problems that SLi/x-fire can bring to the table (compatability issues, 'microstuttering', uneven frame output, poor minimum framerates etc) which don't show up in average-FPS benchmarks.

Apparently ATi said that they have solved the microstuttering with the new 48xx range.

AMD HD 4850 launched

As of 3PM CET the NDA for the Radeon HD 4850 Series has been lifted. Since this came as a surprise to everyone our reviews are not finished yet. However, I have decided to make them public and you can watch as new information comes in.
