AMD to unveil Zen 4 CPUs at CES 2022

We now have confirmation that AM5 only supports DDR5, no DDR4 support on the platform at all.

Also x670 uses a dual chip, chiplet design. I wonder if this is how they bring down the heat high temperatures on the chipset with x570

I thought this was like known since mid last year they were only going DDR5 when one the AMD team spoke about it already and said they wouldn't go dual support?
 
Wonder if there will be any decent boards and fairly cheap. Intel have a possible advantage here, also because of cheap DDR4 to run Raptor Lake, but with the downside of no more CPU support (most likely) afterwards.

The better DDR5 kits in the 6400 speed range are still a bit over 400 quid, doubt they will drop a good amount by a few months but who knows.

Also, 7800x 8 core 16 thread ES was spotted today doing 5.2ghz single core, it has an RDNA2 iGPU built in.

Specs for Zen4

* 24% IPC improvement
* 8-14% higher clock speed depending on model
* Results in up to 37% improvement in core for core performance both ST and MT
* L3 game cache remains unchanged, 4mb per core just like Zen 3. There is no stacked 3D Cache, 3D cache is being saved for the Zen 4 refresh to combat Intels Meteor Lake
* supports pcie5 and ddr5
* Supports AVX-512 instruction set

The 24% IPC if true can be taken a read, the higher clock speed i would take the lowest estimate since they boost quite high already, i just can't see it being +14% so lets go with +8%

5950X: MT 28,577, +32% = 37,721 (+37%)

Considering its still the same 16 core 32 thread layout that's impressive.

Wouldn't you multiply the clock speed increase by the IPC increase rather than add the two? So if IPC went from 100 to 124 it would be 134 (124*1.08) rather than 132 (124+8)?

You're right yes, its a compound of the new IPC not the original so i'll revise it. :)

12900K: ST 1997.
5950X: ST 1644, +34% = 2202 (+10%)

12900K: MT 27,472.
5950X: MT 28,577, +34% = 38,293 (+39%)

The 12900K scores about 19,500 without E core so the E cores are worth about 8,000.

1997 + 10% = 2,197 ST.

I think the power consumption is also going to be pretty bad on RTL, as i understand it its on the same node, the 12900K is pulling 260 watts in R23 i can see RTL passing 300 watts, Intel just don't care, they have put out 500 watt + CPU's before and hidden water chillers on demoing them.

True, they will ignore as usual power consumption and raise power to the max to be able to fight with Zen 4, while AMD will focus on performance/power consumption, combined with much better node and architecture it will have similar performance at worst, and much lower power consumption + longevity of platform that will motivate new buyers to buy it, who want to invest in dead platform?
 
Global energy costs are not going to return to anything like what it was in January this year for a few years at least if ever, hydro carbons are becoming scarce and the global hegemony wants prices to remain high.

Not until we have converted to a mixture of renewable and nuclear to a significant degree will prices come down again and that's not happening for many years.

The whole world will be looking to reduce energy consumption and that's bad news for someone like Intel who still have a "why invest in the R&D when no one cares" attitude, its the same attitude they had during the decade of incremental 4 core CPU's, AMD's CPU's are not just efficient because they are on a good node they are architecturally efficient, because over the last few years they put the R&D in, their GPU's are getting that way too, its almost as if they saw this coming.
