AMD to unveil Zen 4 CPUs at CES 2022

Interview with Robert hallock.

It's hard to believe that with 2 years of developing that architecture, ddr5, 5nm etc they could only extract about 15% performance, but then maybe they focused all resources on AM5 platform, and Zen 5 will be first proper architecture developed from the ground as new that will fight evenly with whatever Intel has + longevity of that beast platform that even with first generation have so much headroom.

No reason to doubt RPL's IPC improvements yet. The P-core in RPL is now called Raptor Cove and there's also more caches (L2 and L3), the L2 of E-Core which is the same 'Gracemeont' used in ADL- was also doubled. More multithreaded performance is expected because of more 'Gracemont' E-cores, but that doesn't mean we can stop there.
Hello new-old user :).

New Q&A

I haven't watched the whole thing yet but Robert confirms that they are getting over 40% faster multithread performance compared to Zen3 core for core

Crysis averted guys

Also, the 15% single thread number is conservative and will actually be higher in reality for the user.

Robert did drop a big hint though - "the 15% number is from cinebench single thread, now if you go back and look at zen3 we said 19% geomean IPC but it's actually 9% in Cinebench... I don't want to get hopes up cause it's a long time, 3 months till the fall is a long time"

So it seems the zen4 IPC is not as low as people as think it is.

Before Zen4 launches AMD will be doing another presentation and they will unveil the full set of numbers

Glad to hear the power limit of the AM5 socket is 230w (for the 16 core CPU). Details here:

Hell of a lot lower than the maximum power limits seen on Intel's 12th generation.

Nice to see full overclocking support still for Zen CPUs, on the 'B' motherboards.

Halloc says that if you take the TDP and multiply that by 1.35, you get the socket power limit.

There was a question about gaming performance of the 5800X3D vs Zen 4, interesting to see that AMD is still optimizing Zen 4, so they can't say yet about the gaming performance:

exactly what i was thinking too.
G skill 6400 32GB CL32 kit dropped to 400 imported now, nice to see DDR5 steadily decreasing in price, still a bit to go though. May be another 100 or more cheaper by the time AM5 platform launches. DDR5 would be a lot more reasonable if kits like that or better are £300 or below in a couple of months. Looks like they might be.

That particular kit dropped 200+ USD in just 3-4 months.

When asked if Zen4 beats the 5800x3d in gaming, Robert was very cagey and then gave a generic answer "we don't know yet"
I think it's fairly safe to say it will. 5800X3D has that 15% boost in some games which benefit from the extra cache. Zen 4 has 15% boost in ST performance across everything it does and it clocks faster.

Yes, real world numbers are never that simple, but it's not exactly a leap in logic to say 15% faster in everything is better than 15% faster in some things.

On the 15%:

Robert said its early days and they want to be conservative, they guided greater than 15% because they know it will be greater than 15%, but how much will depend.

There are multiple ways they are being conservative, for example they guided 19% for Zen 3, but if you look at Cinebench that was only 8-9-10% (its actually 20% total but 12% IPC) All we have given is a tiny window in to what they chip can do. We are very optimistic about its performance.

Was that strictly a stock configuration or was there and special cooling going on here?

Robert: What you see is what you get is really important to us at AMD, i'm not going to stick an air-conditioning unit or a chiller on top of my CPU, i'm not going to show you something you can't easily EASILY recreate at home, that's just, it feels ethically wrong. So the demo we showed was a prototype 16 core part, its power limit was configure somewhere about 105 watts TDP but below the final 170 spec we are working on. Cooling was a 280mm Asetek unit.

A little dig at Intel there :D

Robert: I've seen some angst on that 15% number, i want to touch on that again,i can't go too deep in to it but i want to say we were conservative on that number in like 4 or 5 unique and important ways, just give us the benefit of the doubt, i think we've earned it, we really try hard to deliver exactly as promised or often times a lot more than we promise, so lets see how the summer goes before drawing conclusions, i think Zen 4 and the 7000 series is going to be extremely potent and an hell of an upgrade, give it time.

He was asked about the L3 cache size, if he could disclose the L3 cache size, he said "We cannot" with a huge smile.
Would another doubling of L3 be possible?
CCD die has actually gone smaller. Going from 7nm to 5nm give enough space for than
Each "Zen 4" CCD is reported to be about 8 mm² smaller in die-area than the "Zen 3" CCD, or about 10% smaller

The 6nm 64MB Cache on top of the 7nm 5800X3D is the same size as the 32MB cache in that chip, so 2X the capacity for the same area, this 6nm vs 7nm.

I think that shows just how old and out of date TSMC's 7nm actually is, even compared to their 6nm, Zen 4 is 5nm, a doubling of cache, L3 (64MB from 32MB) and L2 (4MB to 8MB) while the whole thing is still 10% smaller? yeah definitely doable, even the cores could be larger in transistor density terms.

If L3 cache doubling is true, Zen4 will be a beast
Would explain pedestrian gains in CB23 - it doesn't much care about extra cache
And explains why no game performance was shown. It would eat into 5800X3D sales
