I couldn't give a flying #### about Nvidia's pricing structure because the only way it will ever change is if enough people stop buying their cards and that's never going to happen because far too many are sucked in by their branding.

This is just tosh in truth. Look at what is what with the current line up of GPUs and for those running 1440P or even 1080P will be struggling to buy a GPU from AMD to cope with the pretties.

What AMD need to do is release a competing card so the consumer has a decent choice. I would charge the earth if mine was the only product available and that's what NVidia are doing.

Nobody is sucked in at all and look at what happens when competition is enforce.

That sounds like a bit of a sidegrade. I guess the 970 OC helped. Now 1070, that was a proper nice upgrade from a 290 :)

Total side-grade at the time yes but i wasn't going to spend £400 for +10% on a 980 or £550 on a 980TI.

There was no choice in my price range at the time, still isn't, clocked up the GTX 1060 and RX 480 are still only +10% vs my 1.5Ghz 970

More than 10% in dx12. The 970 is horrible at dx12 games (which often also use more than 3.5gb vram) :/

the problem is by the time you come to mainly playing DX12 games there will be something else out.

im waiting patiently for something better from AMD just to solve my annoying coil whine. not to intrusive but as soon as you hear it you cant stop hearing it.

And it shouldn't be, which is one reason i have little interest in another Nvidia GPU, very poor longevity.

Considering the GTX 970 has been available since September 2014 and is still competitive with a GTX 1060 or RX 480 when all 3 are overclocked, I would say anyone who bought one on launch day got an absolute bargain.

so will nvidia sell a titan xp for 500? in a few months? of course not

They might get close, I say that thinking of Maxwell, Just as the Fury was due to release Nvidia released a Titan equivalent in the 980ti at 500, A few less cores and aftermarket cooling allowed the average joe to hit the same performance figures a Titan X hit with his 980ti. There will be a higher price but there's several factors making that so. So we may see an Nvidia release in the 700 to 800 area, Hopefully lower but because Nvidia got away with pricing the 1080 so high we may never see decent pricing again, at least not on the high end stuff.

Why? so is the Jurassic 290, in DX12 and Vulkan it often puts them all to shame, thats my point.

Other than that the RX 480 and GTX 1060 cost little less than the 970 did and yet the 970 is a comparable competitor, its not that it was any good, Hawaii XT in the form of the 390X has them all beat by a mile! its simple more of the same for slightly less money.

So... AMD's cheapest card should be £270...

Given that we expect Vega to be the 5xx series, then why should the cheapest of these cards be more expensive than all of the 4xx series?

That doesn't make sense. Should the cheapest 6xx card be more expensive than the 590?
No, 'we' don't all expect that at all. Obviously.

And we know AMD had plans to have revised Polaris cards.

I expect we'll have baby Vega being 490 and big Vega a named flagship. 460/470/480 revised as 465/475/485.

I prefer the here and now as opposed to AMD's keep waiting strategy :)

Even in the here and now Nvidia are usually not much faster. I much prefer having a card that has plenty of gains to come and is more compatible with the newer api's. The 480 is now just as fast in dx11 and in dx12 a decent bit faster. It all depends how long you keep your cards for. If well over a year then AMD make more sense for me. Around 5-10% slower at launch and a gen up after a few years. 390(290)390x(290x) smokes a gtx780/780ti. The Nvidia cards had the edge at launch and for a bit after. Now the same chips are still competing well where as the Nvidia chips seem like relics.

290 and 290x cost a fair bit more than the 970 on their release.

And the 970 is still kicking strong.

What kind of laughable revisionism is this that the 970 isn't a great card? lol

I buy for at least 2 years, preferably more. When I bought my card, I did a lot of research and I actually waited for the 480 to be released. Major disappointment that turned out to be. My only upgrade options were 1070 and 1080. That's it. Unless I played the waiting game for another year ( this was back in June ) and frankly that's way too long. I've seen a lot of people who favour AMD buy 1070 for the same reason. Even now, if you want to buy a GPU for more than a year, your only option is to wait for Vega. 480 is not that card.

there are a few people who keep playing the same old song. I agree with you, 970 is still a great card even if a few select few we'd have us believe otherwise :)

So why don't you own an Hawaii based card ?

You obviously found the 970 more appealing.
