AMD VEGA confirmed for 2017 H1

I still expect Vega to come Q1 2017. I know if they say 1st half, it usually means June/July, but AMD cannot afford to wait a full year with nothing but midrange offerings.

I'm confident they are leaving Vega to fill the '490' naming void, plus a flagship series. It would be silly to do that a full year later. Might as well be an entirely new series, which would come with different expectations. Though if that does happen, I'm guessing they'd make the 480 a 570, with Vega occupying the 580 an 590 slots. Still think that's a bit crazy, as an entire 'series' based on a new generation of chips and architecture and only topping out at the x80 level would be a complete joke.

If they're counting Cardboard-esque VR 'viewers', it's entirely possible.

I'm going with the Computex 2017 rumour that was floating around 6 weeks ago or so....

Looks like Vega might be battling Volta and not Pascal then

This is what I've been saying before, AMD's Vega (originally Greenland) and NV's Volta were intended to be released this generation but both were significantly delayed. Therefore it makes sense that Vega will be competing against Volta, and is supported even more by the fact that Navi isn't due to be released until 2018. I doubt AMD's plan is to be half a year behind Nvidia for the next few generations, even they know that'll cost them.

Irrelevant in the enthusiast market, yes. Not in the low, mid or high end market though.
Doing well in the enthusiast arena helps out their lower end products. Halo/flagship entries improve brand value.

AMD have done better than Nvidia in the $150-250 range for many years now(performance-wise). It did not help them.

AMD have had far more issue than that hampering their public image. Not even running against Intel for the past few years has been a disaster for the CPU market and for AMD's CPU public image. While I agree that doing well at all levels increases your brand image, we have to remember that we are a very vocal minority on this forum and we have a tendency to all be doom harbingers.

I for one hope that AMD come back to the CPU and GPU market with a bang, because those two markets and desperately in need of competition.

If it's coming in 1H 2017 I hope the target is higher than the talked about 1080 performance level. I very much doubt they'll compete with Volta though but maybe somewhere inbetween, as by then we will indeed be probably half way between Pascal and Volta or maybe closer to the Volta release. Anything less will be depressing for AMD and their customers.

Look at how many people seriously consider the 1060 even in situations where the 480 has everything going for it - people tend to do funny things with association sub-consciously when it comes to buying stuff and having a card around about the 1070 as well as the position the 480 is in would have helped to drive sales of it (the 480) a fair bit - more than people seem to want to believe.

I am far more active in other forums and do not at all treat this place as any sort of representative opinion leader, nor do I ever base any of my comments on what people here specifically think(unless I specifically say so).

I'm talking about in general. In fact, a place like this is far more likely to *not* be swayed by flagship products in terms of judging lower market entries. People here are more informed. While the majority of the PC market is less so, often by a great deal. There is no explanation for why the GTX960 sold so well other than the fact that it came off the back of the ultra successful and highly praised GTX970. The 960 was outgunned by AMD quite handily in its price range, yet was still a success.

And going lower in the range, we saw something similar with the GTX750Ti, where despite the R7 265 being clear ahead in terms of performance in the same price bracket, got little-to-no attention from the market.

AMD are very irrelevant for the majority of us on this forum sadly now.

Correct. Glad I got my 1070 a few months ago, it was absolutely the right buy for my needs.

If Vega beats my 1070 by 10% in DX11 games (more in dx12) then I'll upgrade instantly, though I only expect it to match a 1070, judging by Polaris' performance.

So most likely I'll have my 1070 until I replace it with a 1170, sigh.

I disagree. For years, if people have wanted the very best performance, Nvidia was and still is the way to go (looking at you Titan range). However, AMD have consistently offered products that, while they may not have as high a performance, they've come close performance wise, but at a cheaper price than the Nvidia card they're competing with. There has, though, obviously been a few Nvidia stand outs, like the 970 and now the 1070.

I think, though, that Vega will likely fill the void between the 1070 and 1080 on both price and performance. Which for some people, can make all the difference when trying to justify costs.

I don't see how you can disagree. Gregster said that AMD are irrelevant for the vast majority of users on this forum.

This is an enthusiast forum, so it makes sense that the majority are after a mid range or greater GPU. 1060 = mid range, outperforms RX480.

Suits me fine tbh, WoW legion will release in a few days that will keep me busy uptil Christmas at the earliest, probably further too, my 290 Tri-X is coping admirably still :)

I'll swap to Vega when it lands, as its bound to be better than my 290 by a fair whack i would imagine. Only thing i intend on buying and playing in the future is Sea of Thieves and i have an Xbox One for that.

Funnily enough i just ordered 2 Dell Workstations for work and both of them come with a 1080 lol, they are going to sit unused for probably 90% of their life, in 3 years time they will be replaced by newer workstations, such is the cycle of their life.

Picked up a msi gaming 390 brand new for £200 in March (once I sold hitman) and that was an upgrade from 7970...bargain!

To accompany it i have an Acer Predator (2560x1080 144Hz) so near certain my next card will be AMD again due to the freesync monitor and because they are bang for buck in the mid/high range.

For me it's their laptop GPUs where their biggest problem is! When I upgrade the laptop in a year or so 1070/1080 will be a no brainer..so Nvidia again.

I for one am hoping AMD come back with some good competition on both GPU and CPU markets. There NEEDS to be competition because these prices will only get worse.

Being truthful here they are more likely to still be playing catch up again. With 1080 being twice as fast as the RX480 with a similar TDP and core count. I'm ignoring price here. Purely a performance comparison.

That means to match 1070,1080 levels vega will have to be quite the architectural jump.

And even then if it matches 1070, 1080 you will likely have news of Volta. Which again will put nvidia in front.

What kimd of "workstation" comes with a 1080? :/ Even if it were for a render farm or pro-graphics work, you wouldn't get a 1080 as the GPU. Maybe if you're a games developer?

Intel's CPU pricing has been pretty constant for many years now.

I'm still baffled that people complain about them given how long a good CPU will last you.
