AMD VEGA confirmed for 2017 H1

Does anybody see how AMD are ever going to wrestle the performance crown away from Nvidia or is it now all down to price, AMD producing the "best bang for buck" but Nvidia will always be on top in terms of raw performance where money is no object.

Nvidia just seem to be a generation ahead and I can't see how VEGA will leapfrog that?

Cheers

P.S. I'm using a FuryX with a Freesync monitor so I will probably a VEGA adapter even if it's not on top in terms of peformance

They claimed during the earnings call Q&A that Vega is designed to be a step ahead of current GPUs, and be extremely scalable. Along with that it'll be extremely competitive not only now but for later as well.

If anyone wants to listen to the call, and Q&A

Edit: Have not read that call yet ^^^^ maybe i'm wrong about higher than GTX 1080 perf ^^^^^

I think they will get 1080'ish performance with Vega but i doubt they are looking at Pascal Titan-X performance cards, the problem is yields are low for cards like that and if AMD did it nVidia would just spit out a GTX 1080TI and almost no one buys AMD instead of nVidia at that level.

It doesn't justify AMD's costs to do it.

@N19h7m4r3, i think we are looking at [Linked below] at least for 2017, Zen, China Licensing deals, PS4 Pro, XBox Scorpio, Google Deep Learning, Intel iGPU licensing, Media workstation GPU's looking ground breaking with integrated SSD's.....

IMO 2017 is the year AMD start running healthy profits again, gain reputation and market-share in key industries

That ^^^ will send AMD's share price skyward.

People, please stop using Steam as a GPU vendor share barometer, the fact that 5 year old+ GPU's outnumber this and last generation GPU's should tell you all you need to know about how ridiculous Steam Hardware Survey is for a measure of preference habits.

The last time i took part in it i had a Tahiti LE, 3 GPU's ago.

I cant see how people are already writing off VEGA already, its not out yet, we know very little about the cards performance bar a few demos.

We know that from the few demos we have seen that its performing pretty good. This would be on very early drivers and poor cooling (all of the vents where closed off on the demo rigs). So we just don't know other than in some of these demos it looks like it could be a bit faster than a GTX 1080 (but even that is almost totally speculation)

I'm still quite optimistic that the big VEGA card in its final form will be better than the 1080 overall. The competition will drive down the prices to some extent as well there is always undercutting going on in computer land (after initial release low supply). Look at the 8GB RX 480 card being £199

Contrarily to what some want to claim it is accurate enough as a general picture - when you last took part in it is irrelevant to the way it works. I randomly polls a percentage of the user base - the fact that you had a 7870 or whatever the last time you did it or that I had a 780 the last time I did it doesn't factor into the current dataset whatsoever.

The fact is general consumers tend to hang onto their GPUs for a long time and even stuff like the old GTX460s are still used extensively by mainstream users there are a huge number of users on older integrated GPUs playing older generation/low demanding games.

Frankly, it's incredible to see where they are now compared to a year ago. Their share price hit a low of $1.83 on February 16th last year. Lisa Su deserves immense credit for the turnaround they've made under her leadership.

I can see why people would based on the last few years - but it is certainly premature to do so - there is a lot of new tech in Vega that even if half of it pans out like AMD hype it up/those with technical knowledge expect then there is certainly a lot of potency there. My worry is that AMD have a bad tendency to somehow shoot themselves in the foot even when everything should be going for them.

TBH I don't think people realise quite how close they came to actual disaster - a lot of companies don't walk away from the scenario they've been in some years recently in Q1 (i.e. early 2013) - there is going to have been points where people vital to their survival have had to sit down and make a decision whether they are going to call it a day or put their ongoing support in the company potentially at risk to themselves.

She does, absolutley.

And i think there is more to come yet, i'm thinking $16 by years end.

Whinge much?

If you want to just bitch and moan about a product that we know little to nothing about then why dont you create an "I hate AMD" thread and go and do it in there. Alternatively go into the Nvidia drivers section and whinge and moan with how crap your drivers have been over the last 12-18 months..Hmmm getting a bit of a rep now those crap Nvidia drivers.

Nvidia users trying desparately to keep the mindshare going all one way with whinging and mis-information. Look whatever AMD release wont change a thing in your eyes but I have seen plenty of forum posts all over that convince me that there are quite a few Nvidia owners who are going to switch to the Red side if Vega is competitive and I beleive that is what we will get this time around.

Less than six months worth of driver updates is all it took to make the 480 a 1060 beater in most games in DX11 & DX12 let alone Vulkan (Only Doom so far, but it's a start). Things are getting better in camp AMD/RTG on a regular basis, so with the Vega showing we have had so far I think this could be a turning point in there fortunes.

This Quarter is going to be Ryzen and no company in their right mind would shadow the launch of what is to be their most important product yet with another big product...That's just common sense surely. Also we all know that AMD just doesnt have the money to knock out a new arch every 12 months to "catch up" with Nvidia.

So to all the smug little Nvidia chimps out there, go to your own Forums and talk drivel (about AMD if it makes you feel better) and stop the crap spouting in a thread that is about supposed to be about something else entirely.

No wonder Nvidia mindshare is so strong.....lots of minions spouting rubbish louder than anyone else.

Hey mate,

Best to just add him to your ignore list. It's obvious from the amount of negative posts he's submitted to this thread that he only has one intention.

If he bothers you, best to remove him from the equation, trust me you won't be the only one to have done so, then he can whine/troll in his own little world ;)

I think they will, but it will only JUST be better value. All this talk of amazing 1080 smashing performance for 20-30% less than current 1080 pricing is pure fantasy. AMD aren't going to rock the GPU world with VEGA, or upset the pricing structure, but it will give consumers another option.

Shame was hoping they could pull off another 4870, 5870, 7970 or 290x

Does anyone think AMD will release a Vega based card that will compete with the NVIDIA 1070 or is it just the 1080 they are aiming for?

If AMD are to have similar pricing to the NVIDIA ranges then there's quite a price gap for the current AMD range.

Looking at current prices on OverclockersUK:

AMD
480 8GB £200 to £290

NVIDIA
1060 6GB £220 to £320
1070 £380 to £500
1080 £550 to £730

Would AMD not be competing with all the price ranges or are they just looking at the very top end with the Vega release?

If the pound stays stable then I would be expecting some AMD Vega card in the £300 to £400 range which would suit me if it has consistent performance around the NVIDIA 1070.

I currently have a AMD Fury pro with a LG Freesync 1440p 21:9 which is currently working OK in the Freesync range up to 75Hz, but would like a reasonable step up this year.

Don;t bother wasting your energy, some people are just too ignorant to understand how scientific polling works and will blindly repeat the same nonsense about not being asked in the last X years, completely oblivious to the fact that is irrelevant in constructing an accurate poll.

Steam only need to pick a few 1000 users at random to get accurate verifiable results. The people that ignore that fact simply have an agenda and are biased by their choice of GPU brand to the point that they will ignore all common sense.

My guess is it will be ever so slightly slower than a 1080 for ever so slightly cheaper, i believe nothing monumental is going to happen this time round unfortunately.

I think there's several possible ways it's done, They do a few thousand mainly newcomer accounts to make up the data used for the survey or if there isn't enough new accounts they make the numbers up by asking old accounts to do the survey again, that allows them to provide good data on what gpu's are trending at the time. Because new accounts are more likely to have new machines and hardware it allows the survey to show what hardware is selling well that month. Whats debatable is whether it is just that data that's used or if the end result is made up using old data as well.

Does the December survey include survey results from several years ago? Is it only using data from the last year or is it only using data from the last month? Or do they have to make the numbers up by including old data.

Personally I think it's only good for showing what gpu's were selling well during the time period it pertains to.

I think the steam hardware survey has it's place, it's not perfect but it's all we've got. Ignoring it would be unwise, considering it completely accurate is equally unwise. It doesn't paint the full picture.

Anyway, this is the AMD Vega thread. Most of us are hoping Vega will be brilliant, so that we have competition back. Some of us hope it's a pathetic release, so that they stay warm at night under their green blankets. It's clear to all who is who ;)

Posting this on my 980M (NVIDIA!) laptop, for anyone thinking I'm against NVIDIA.
