AMD VEGA confirmed for 2017 H1

As long as it’s better value than Nvidia – you know, like, less than £1,000 or whatever Nvidia prices cards at these days - it will sell and possibly bring down some Nvidia prices. Win Win. 90% of the speed for 70% of the price is a no-brainer for me.

Only that won't happen. Why do you think AMD is going to do you any favours? VEGA will be priced according to what the market will bear, and it has been proven the market will bear a high GPU price at the top end. Of course, it all depends what the performance level of VEGA is, but if it's around 1080 performance, expect a 1080 price. Do not expect it to offer 1080 performance levels for the price of a 1070... that will NOT happen.

I am starting to get worried now (floating in and out of this thread as most of it is bickering :p); almost a year after the 1080 release, a die that's even larger than the Titan XP (albeit, by a fraction), performance that might trade blows (we know it's faster but only in best case scenarios) with the 1080 from the alleged big Vega and it's using HBM2. If the price is right, most the above is much less of a concern but let's be honest - plan for the worst and hope for the best when it comes to pricing.

Come on AMD, please surprise us :D.

Sterling rate will probably be well south of 1.20 too if that helps your mood? :D :p

Erm, we know Vegas well beaten before its available, we've known since last May, where yer been ? :p

Yeah, I know, that's what I said... I wasn't speculating the fact lol.

Whinge much?

If you want to just bitch and moan about a product that we know little to nothing about then why dont you create an "I hate AMD" thread and go and do it in there. Alternatively go into the Nvidia drivers section and whinge and moan with how crap your drivers have been over the last 12-18 months..Hmmm getting a bit of a rep now those crap Nvidia drivers.

Nvidia users trying desparately to keep the mindshare going all one way with whinging and mis-information. Look whatever AMD release wont change a thing in your eyes but I have seen plenty of forum posts all over that convince me that there are quite a few Nvidia owners who are going to switch to the Red side if Vega is competitive and I beleive that is what we will get this time around.

Less than six months worth of driver updates is all it took to make the 480 a 1060 beater in most games in DX11 & DX12 let alone Vulkan (Only Doom so far, but it's a start). Things are getting better in camp AMD/RTG on a regular basis, so with the Vega showing we have had so far I think this could be a turning point in there fortunes.

This Quarter is going to be Ryzen and no company in their right mind would shadow the launch of what is to be their most important product yet with another big product...That's just common sense surely. Also we all know that AMD just doesnt have the money to knock out a new arch every 12 months to "catch up" with Nvidia.

So to all the smug little Nvidia chimps out there, go to your own Forums and talk drivel (about AMD if it makes you feel better) and stop the crap spouting in a thread that is about supposed to be about something else entirely.

No wonder Nvidia mindshare is so strong.....lots of minions spouting rubbish louder than anyone else.

I still don't understand how it could be 'only' as fast as a 1080. I mean if you took a Polaris core, gave it the 4096 shaders the Vega is rumoured to have and left everything else alone it would be quite close/equal to the 1080. Add in extra bandwidth from HBM and all the new technologies on top of that plus an almost certainly higher clock and more technologies they have said they're yet to talk about, I don't get why it would be only as fast as a 1080. That would be majorly disappointing to me.

So if VEGA comes along with amazing performance for around the same price, you think no one will buy it? Come on...

Even if you do believe that, you can bet AMD don't and will not being anyone any favours when it comes to pricing VEGA.

As long as they provide better price for performance then they will do fine. But if they come in with same performance or even only say 10% better a year later than nvidia and demand the same prices, it will not do so well IMO.

Vega' rumoured to be just over 400 on bandwidth, which is lower than the Fury, and even the TXP with its GDDR5X.

The problems here are brought to us by that word "rumoured" and also the word "speculate"....and the letter H, the numbers 1 & 2017.

We really know nothing concrete about Vega......until it's told to us by AMD and people have a chance to bench it in the real world.

:)

I think they will, but it will only JUST be better value. All this talk of amazing 1080 smashing performance for 20-30% less than current 1080 pricing is pure fantasy. AMD aren't going to rock the GPU world with VEGA, or upset the pricing structure, but it will give consumers another option.

Despite all the doom and gloom in the thread, AMD's earnings call last night was rather good. Plenty of people buying into them again.

Yes, the issue becomes how much of the market is actually left to sell something to!

So do you know how much of the market is left that hasn't gone out and bought a 1070 or a 1080? (or a 1060 for that matter).

It's probably millions.

All those on older AMD/Nvidia cards for a start (not everyone can upgrade as fast as the majority of people on these forums), then there's all those on older intergrated graphics APUs.

Even though Nvidia has done well with their 10 series it probably still pales in comparison to the numbers that havent got one. Look at the Steam figures for instance...AFAIK the 970 is still the most popular card on Steam and the last time I looked that was 5% of the marketshare running steam. ONLY 5%
(There may be newer figures but it's still going to be a relatively small percentage).

So there is still a big market out there to explore for Polaris/Vega/Navi etc...etc...etc..

With just 2 HBM modules on it its not going to be as expensive to make as some people seem to think, the Fury had 4, the 290 had 16 Memory IC's.

I think it will be priced competitively with the GTX 1080, not ground breaking but probably more GTX 1070 price for GTX 1080 performance.

Yup, AMD on the march again.

Last year was the killer tho, from about $3 to $11

I never bought last year...was a complete idiot in the matter. Had my hand in Bank of Ireland...that didn't go well. hahaha

Plus Irish brokers' fees are a joke as well. Recently went with DeGiro, and loving the low fees.

Does anybody see how AMD are ever going to wrestle the performance crown away from Nvidia or is it now all down to price, AMD producing the "best bang for buck" but Nvidia will always be on top in terms of raw performance where money is no object.

Nvidia just seem to be a generation ahead and I can't see how VEGA will leapfrog that?

Cheers

P.S. I'm using a FuryX with a Freesync monitor so I will probably a VEGA adapter even if it's not on top in terms of peformance

Do you?

Because a large number of people with intergrated graphics cards are going to run out and buy a £300 - £800 video card yea?

Steam is dominated by people who buy either secondhand hardware or non top tier stuff.

Nice.

I buy mainly ATI/AMD video cards, have done since the late 90's, i currently run a Fury X, which next to an 8500 has been one of my most disappointing ATI/AMD experiences to date, my fantastic Fury X is on its deathbed, the amount of times over the past few weeks I've almost purchased a TXP whilst waiting for VEGA news is quite large, AMD need to keep people like me on side otherwise they are ******.
