AMD VEGA confirmed for 2017 H1

oh ffs that event was the nightmare scenario for the next few months, AMD literally told the consumer nothing at all. That means they don't consider Vega strong enough now to show it off and nvidia is free to fleece away as AMD loses more ground to the high end market. 1080TI it is then I guess I'll call the bank manager tomorrow....

tbh after watching that, initially i was like WTF did i just waste 2 hours on, but given the sandbagging over Ryzen thats been going on, and the hype AMD knew was present leading up to this event and Vega and how underwhelming it is, Raja at the end mentioned a seperate event later, and i reckon knowingly egged people on with the rubbish about the T-Shirt at the end, and building hype on the naming video which was again a massive fail let down, only makes me more increasingly positive that they have real news later.

If they dont then they need to sack their entire PR department and go hire Nvidias.

I doubt if they would announce anything today. Why would they save the big vega news for an event that is not even hyped. I think they are just baiting Nvidia to launch the 1080ti before Vega unlike the shambolic Fury Launch which was rained on by the 980ti. Besides there have been no firestrike leaks like there were for the RX480.

Once the know what they are aiming for then expect Vega to be either much cheaper or faster than a 1080ti.

I would have had a bunch of stage lights setup, after Raja did his intro for him to say:

"I have something special with me today ladies and gentlemen, something that has been highly anticipated, something revolutionary, something that will bring 4K gaming to the masses!" Then put on a pair of shades as lights in the room dim as he pulls the card out of his jacket and boom the stage lights shine on the card as Raja says "Today I bring to you Vega!!"

Then watch the crowd pop.

i wouldn't bet on that, high performance parts is down to cost of R&D, when you have a lot of money injected it's easy to push the highest performance, AMD injected all they have on Ryzen, i doubt they injected enough on Vea, simply because CPUs are much more profitable, margin wise and market size, so i really dont think they are sandbaging Vega, they just don't want to take away the spotlight off Ryzen, my guess a couple weks or a month after Ryzen release, they will start talking about Vega

At the end of the show we got one interesting bit of news regarding Bethesda although we're unlikely to see anything from Bethesda's big franchises for some time as we've just had the ones I'd be interested in, ie Fallout 4, Dishonored 2 & Doom. Maybe there's a Rage 2 in the works, that would be nice, or an Elder Scrolls but I doubt that'll be any closer than a few years away considering they've only just finished redoing Skyrim for the new gen. Actually didn't we here a Wolfenstein was coming?

I like news as it keeps me interested, Amd always seem scared of giving any info on cards until they flop on launch day.
Roll on zen benchmarks on Thursday ( I hope ).

Here's the thing about AMD as an Nvidia (I wouldn't say fan boi), but someone who would find it hard to not buy Nvidia, AMD do things the right way round. They are open source, they embrace new technologies in an open collaborative way... all things which I appreciate and value as an engineer my self. However Nvidia have the Game Development market cornered. They seem to have closer integration with Devs, so I feel like by buying AMD, Nvidia's closer integration and hence proprietary technology would be something I am missing in game.

Nothing of what said above is new, it's just how I feel. And I am on the cusp of buying a Ryzen system (maybe) and now even excited to see what AMD can do with Vega.

But tell me what state are the AMD drivers in? My last AMD card was a 5870 and drivers was why I moved as well as Nvidia's proprietary features in games.

---

And I have to say that Freesync is a sweet sweet sweetner when you look at price.

Actually, they've been steadily improving and made a big step forward last year which culminated in the "ReLive edition" (EDIT: they now have a major annual update and last year it was the Crimson ReLive release).

If you search for "Radeon ReLive" drivers you will see tons of positive reviews. Nvidia seems to have been going in the opposite direction.

Right now, as things stand, AMD's only problem is that it has no high-end GPU. This will hopefully be fixed with Vega.

EDIT: As far as game optimisation is concerned, this is also improving. DX12/Vulkan are helping in that area and collaborations such as the one with Bethesda are promising.

the only good thing coming out of capsicin, is that Nvidia have no clue what Vega is up to, price/perf/date, so they will be shooting in the dark with their Ti pricing/perf.

I fail to see the good in this, when people are waiting for this and have been waiting for a long time. But hey, as long as NVidia is in the dark ... it's all good, right?

Not sure why people are still asking when Vega will be released. They said end of Q2 or H1 months ago and havent changed it. They are keeping Nvidia in the dark and they are waiting for 1080Ti to drop..then maybe, just maybe they have a better chance of competing with the Ti. Nvidia will announce the 1080Ti in the next few days and I wouldnt be surprised if it was around $799 or maybe even $699 because AMD are grabbing all the headlines at the moment and this way they can steal the thunder. They did it with the 980Ti, so why expect anything less. They play the same game year in year out but this time it will be slightly different because I think that Vega will compete and be more on a level footing. We all know what is coming from Nvidia so they will have to drop the 1080Ti at a silly price to make any real waves before AMD release Vega. Oh and we will have another round of 1080 owners and TXP owners ranting about the price of the Ti because they would have been shafted again.....but it's what Nvidia do. Still some good stuff coming and a few developers actually getting stuck into DX12 and Vulkan and also MGPU with 100% scaling...that is really nice to see. I mean what would happen if they all did that. Interesting year ahead methinks. :)

Some people think AMD is hiding or sandbagging? lol. They simply do not have anything to show. They know VEGA is only around GTX 1080 performance and what they will say with that? They cannot show right now VEGA performance and make their shareholders disappointed.

Yer, they are keeping Nvidia on their toes and not releasing anything yet.... Meanwhile Nvidia are mopping up sale after sale after sale as there is no competition . Well played AMD and good to see the apologists out in force as well.
