Likewise, friends and family talked me out of it when shares were less than $2. Was going to put £500 in, but to be fair it did look like the company might go bust at the time which is why I shied away from doing it.

should have done it. if they go bust you gotta pay £5k for your next gpu lol not even ti or titan version.

if that's the pricing then vega is a fail, not only they have no SKU close to 300$ ballpark, Nvdia already sold truckloads of 1070/1080, with low-mid end volta few months away. all nvidia needs to do is to cut the price by 50$ for the 1070 and 1080, this will automatically renders vega useless, even if they decide to follow up on a price war and even if vega is slightly faster than it's direct competition. this pricing if really stupid especialy for the low end, AMD could be gearing up to another break even architecture, with no market share benefit at all, maybe even pushing more towards their competition. low vega cannot top 350$.

Based on RX580 prices it is logical that the next step up would be $300. Nvidia are not going to enter a price war because they don't need to: they can sell at worse price/performance ratios based on brand name alone.

Furthermore, the vast majority of their profit comes from gaming (GPGPU/cars and all that stuff is a distant second). If they cut their margins and lower guidance their stock will tank like brick in the next ER (they are enjoying record highs right now).

there is only 20% performance difference between 1070 and 1080, if low vega sits right in the middle with 10% difference from each, it's still too expensive this late in the game, a price cut on the 1070 isn't just a possibility, imo it's guaranteed, not that many ppl would pay almost a 100$ for 10% extra performance at a 300$ ballpark, AMD would get away with it at a higher segment like 500$ ballpark(1080) where value of perf/$ is less impactful. add to it the 4GB against 8GB perception, even if it works perfectly fine.

Again, Nvidia won't do anything of that sort. Just like the 1060 is outselling the 580, so will the 1070s/1080s outsell the Vegas even those are 10% faster for the same/lower price.

Everyone gets what they want in the end: AMD makes some profit, Nvidia makes even more profit, informed enthusiasts can grab better value for money from AMD, and average Joes can boast they have an Nvidia card (even though they could've done slightly better for their money). The world will go on...

Biggest mistake I ever made was missing out on shares when they were $2.50. If not for my Mrs talking me out of it, I would have bought a couple of grands worth but I am not really a gambler either and having never bought shares in anything, it was an easy sway from the wife.

Biggest success in my investing was NOT missing that! :D

The AMD Financial Analyst meeting is today at 9pm. It'll be interesting to see their projected profits over the course of this financial year. We may well get an updated road map too.

Please know that 99% of the time these calls will give quotes along the lines of:

Vega is on schedule for a Q2 release. It will be competitive.

Just to set expectations near where they should be...

It doesn't matter how fast the vega is going to be if AMD cannot manage to fix the black screen issues that are a real problem with the AMD gpus, it seems only nvidia can provide quality gpus at the moment.

Been running AMD cards since a 7600GT and never had a black screen. Never had a driver issue either.

to be honest never had driver issues with AMD either, but

Had a HD 7950 (4 years ago) and I was experieng black screen issues.
Now have a 390 and I am dealing with black screen issues.
btw both on a completely different systems (except for the monitor)

had around 10 nvidia gpus in the pass without any issues
please tell me why my next gpu should be AMD(vega) and not NVIDIA?

It was the cable...

I get black screens on my 390's every now and again also. I've tried half a dozen cables, maybe more, and even tried hdmi and dvi to rule out DP, so it definitely does exist in some cases.

If I were you I'd stick with Nvidia, they sound like the right fit.
