ohn Pitzer, Semiconductor Analyst at Credit Suisse :
How should we think about your share aspirations with Polaris now ramping, Vega next year? What do you think you can get your share back to within that market?

Dr. Lisa Su, AMD President & CEO :
We have made very good progress I would say in the first couple of quarters this year in terms of graphics. I think it’s nice, when you look at graphics it’s both in the consumer side on the channel as well as in the OEM business and on the professional graphics market. There’s a large opportunity. I think we’ve gained a good amount of share over the last few quarters, we’re going to continue and consistently drive [share growth]. We believe that there’s no reason we can’t be at 50/50 share overtime, but it will certainly take some time to get there. The key thing is enhancing our relationships with customers, because we believe that it’s also important to have a very sticky business going forward.

[…]I think the market is on-fire. It’s a great market. Our strategy in GPUs is to play across the entire market. We think we have the IP, the capability, the talent to do that. We started with gaining share in consumer and that’s why Polaris is so important for us this year. As we go into more of the higher-end markets with our next generation Vega architecture what you will find is the hardware is very very competitive.

So,Vega might be not too bad then and I do hope the bit about a better relationship with customers means they are investing more on the software side.

Hopefully, they will get some people who can design a proper reference cooler too! ;) :D

Deluded.com

Why is that deluded? They didnt say they expect to get 50% its more like they dont expect to get 50 or over. They have gained about 10% in a year or so and there has just been Polaris. They are around 30% so they expect to gain roughly another 10 percent and if its in the cards possibly more taking them in the 40% ~ region so upto 50.

But this means vega needs to be good. We allrdy getting revamped Polaris with better power usage and overclocking.

Lisa still did not learn anything from over hyping Fury X. Overclocking dream, world fastest card etc. and look what it turns out be. At least take a lesson from Nvidia book that you never over hype a product before its launch.

I cant see anything wrong with this statement (Paraphrased as it may be, but I wanted to highlight the important bits) at all. It's quite reasonable and realistic considering the 10% in a year jump. She does say 50/50 share over time and that it will take some time to get there. Sensible and measured statement there...i.e. no mention of Overclocking or dreaming anywhere in that statement ;)

Not quite sure what she means by "Sticky Business" but hey, keep an open mind yeah! LOL :p

Once again people putting words into peoples mouths and taking it as gospel. Please stop your getting tiresome now. :(

Yes, and how many baked beans do Heinz sell?
(I'm not sure why we are now bringing in other companies as well)
Because you made an irrelevant point about install base when that isn't the most important thing for a business.

No, you weren't. You where talking about 'Apple vs Google, with AMD being Google.', no obvious mention - or even allusion to - 'premium ranges'. In fact the start of the sentence straight after that is ' Great value'.

I was, but I didn't realise you needed me to spell out every single implied thing in a sentence for context. Here, I'll clarify: Apple put more emphasis on marketing for their phones and by being not just first movers but also properly positioning themselves in the public's mind as the premiere smartphone company (through clever marketing and branding) they can charge higher premiums and have unbelievable profit margins, even though Google (through 3rd parties especially) has similar or better offerings, both in terms of hardware & software (debatable etc).

So how does this analogy work? In terms of AMD vs Nvidia, the latter has better marketing & branding, and in turn this allows it to have better margins. Just like in Apple's case. It's not a question of install base, though usually they go hand in hand in such markets, but not necessarily. In Apple's case the user base has shrunk simply because there's a certain elasticity they can't reach without compromising their brand; there's security & CS & many other things which may not be worth it, etc etc. Hey, it's an analogy not a perfect like for like scenario.

Who's Alex and what does this question even mean?

Price is right reference.

Reasonable goals, but not terribly inspiring from a corporate perspective. You'd really think they'd want to aim and expect higher. It's as if they are admitting that the best they could ever do is be 'as good' as Nvidia.

Investors will want to hear more positive bytes than that.

Tbh there is such a thing as being realistic. There is not many here that even think 50% is achievable. If she came in and said we will be taking 80% then she would be locked up. The goal is 50% and no time scale is mentioned. I think it can be done but it's a hard ask any time in the next 2-3 years and possibly longer.

I would probably have said 40% to keep things real as they are not far off 30% atm. 50% in this climate is really reaching for the sky against Nvidia atm.

It can only be done if AMD beats Nvidia continuously from the top end with not only Raw performance but also with overclocking advantage and efficiency, which will never happen until big companies like Samsung or Microsoft fund them billions for it.
