AMD vs Intel for a 4090 - which one will be best?

So I'm deliberating AMD vs Intel for processor. I rarely upgrade CPUs as I'm a wimp when it comes to taking off the air cooler etc.
Wondering whether to go AMD or for a 13700/13900k?
Any thoughts or recommendations?

I use VR, Emulation and triple monitor PC gaming. In the old days, I remember my AMD procc really being behind Intel in emulation but as far as I know they're awesome now. Any advice?

I kind of want this to be a buy-once, cry-once decision as upgrading CPU etc will likely not be for me and by the time I'll do that, I'll probably just be buying a new rig.

They're all too weak atm. You should wait for the Zen 4 3D in Spring for a proper CPU for such a card. If you didn't have all those stipulations I'd say just get on AM5 now, with a 7600X, and then upgrade in 6 months properly, because the CPU swaps are simple to do tbh.

If you really don't want to wait, or upgrade later, then a 13900K that's nicely tuned will still outpace the 7950X in games, even if not by a lot.

Wait till next week when the 13th gen benchmarks get released, now the 4090 is out no doubt most if not all the reviewers will be using it.

AM5 then, meteor lake requires a mobo again.
He just said he is not upgrading CPU's until it's time for a new rig, so wtf

Get a 13700k. Decent priced, and wont have a huge difference compared to the 13900k

Wait for Zen 4 3D. Looking at the Intel benchmarks for 13th Gen, even the 13900K can't beat the 5800X3D outright, but you expect the Zen 4 3D CPUs to do so.
Exactly that. To have a chance of beating the 5800X3D in games that like cache (according to Intel's own performance slides) you will probably need the fastest and most expensive DDR5 too. All to try and beat a processor based on two+ year old CPU architecture. Looking forward to AM5 X3D too, hopefully it can use the slowest DDR5 and still be the fastest gaming chip similar to the 5800X3D being able to achieve great performance on the slowest DDR4 memory.

And what happens to games that dont use that cache. The 5800 3d is slower than the normal 5800x in those, and that one isnt particular fast nowadays.

Which games are slower on the 5800X3D? I can think of some productivity apps where the X3D is marginally slower (by a few percent) but not in games.

I just went through a few reviews from TPU, Guru3D etc. There was not one game where the X3D was slower than the 5800X.

You are right, its only cs go thats slower, but still plenty of games it ties the 5800x, which is kinda outdated for the calibre of a 4090.

zen4 3d will be the 2nd generation so more improved over the 1st one I would be very surprised if it doesnt beat 13th gen overall in gaming and you also have to come zen5 and 3d version of that

4090 will be best used on 4K anyway so the difference will be even less if any but with AMD you do have path to drop in future CPU upgrades

would it be controversial to suggest that its not a CPU bottleneck at this point, but a monitor bottleneck? Get an 8k 120hz monitor and its all good no matter which CPU you go with :P though would have been nice if the 4090 had DP2.0 ports

Civ 6, rdr2, apex legends, dying light 2
I'll give you Dying Light 2, it's a tie there. The others all show the 5800X3D winning though even if not by a huge margin.

I run triple 4k so my resolution like 11520x2160 close to 8k

And I run 3d on some games which increases load by 30
Percent gpu
