AMD - What can they do to improve?

When a bad driver comes out from Nvidia, you don't get a wave of Nvidia owners screaming they're going AMD, as their drivers are utter *****, they all just say, im going back to the xxxx set, and waiting for the next ones, as i never had a prob with those.

They won't scream im going AMD, because of that utter **** driver tag they can't get rid of.

You should look at the nVidia forums now and then :D Full of "Another driver that keeps making my computer BSOD - I have had enough and going AMD" with a few expletives thrown in and mostly in capitals :D

Because the 980 is faster perhaps?

Could be Pete.

Do they actually sell them though (in terms of phones). I have always had a contract for as long as I can remember and went with whatever phone tickled my fancy at the time and all the guys I work with have pretty much done the same. I pay the same for my contract, regardless of getting an Iphone/HTC/Samsung. Of course you will have people who buy them but generally, most people use a contract no? As for the Tablets, Out of the many many guys i work with, most of them have various tablets and most of us use a Samsung and only 2 guys I know have Apple's.

People ask for an iPhone / iPad Contract specifically, to a lot of people an Apple branded product is all they will consider, i know quite a few people like that.
Ask them whats so special about it and they um and erm? before saying "its an Apple" ask them why they upgraded from the iPhone 5 to 6 and they scratch their heads before saying "its the new iPhone"

My mobile devices are all Samsung. I like Android and Samsung make sturdy reliable products that don't cost the earth.

Nvidia market themselves as a premium brand, AMD don't. In this day and age of micro celebrity culture, psychological conditioning says we should have the latest and greatest as a symbol of status and self importance. People will happily pay a premium for a premium product. This is exactly why Apple have the vast majority of the market share over manufacturers like Samsung who also produce very good hardware. Samsung use cheap plastic shells, Apple use brushed aluminium and sapphire glass screens. The hardware we buy is a reflection of the above and our want/need of a luxurious lifestyle. It's a horribly shallow thing but it sums up human nature rather well.

So without causing a **** storm, what do AMD do wrong that people would rather pay the extra for the 980 over paying far less for the 290X?

Or another way of putting it, is what do nVidia do right to make people want to buy nVidia products over AMD?

In two words........Krap management

when you say what's wrong with the 290X you are actually not looking at the GPU in your minds eye, but AMD itself, the card is a materialistic reflection of a failed corporation.......so the card is ok but not quite right.

the 290X is guilt by association, because if this was a Nvidia card it would be fine.

do they, because i'd say the TITAN X looks cheap, it has a plain black plastic cooler cover and no backing plate, once it's in your rig all you see is a bare circuit board.

There is nothing cheap about the reference cooler design, it's absolutely solid and looks stunning in comparison to some of the horrific plastic looking coolers you see slapped on manufacturer specific cards. Up until now we've only seen photographs of samples with colour variations. I'd imagine the finished product will come with a back plate.

I look at it this way

I almost bought an AMD Cpu but decided against it because the Intel offering was just so much better, more expensive yes but overall just better, less wattage, less heat, better performance and major factor being that no devs were coding for multiple cores on games so while my i7 might have 4 physical cores and 8 threads, it was still a faster chip overall as opposed to a true 8 core cpu.

With regards to GPU, i normally go with AMD purely because their price to performance ratio is much much much better than Nvidia, i dont agree that Nvidia rinse peoples wallets for the performance they offer where as AMD normally come very close for significantly cheaper, plus Nvidia are just shady all over as well, i imagine a bunch of black suit wearing, sunglass indoors wearing douchebags sat around drinking brandy and smoking cigars laughing at their consumers, as their board of directors.

Also regarding mobiles, i was Android for many years until i bought the Samsung Galaxy S3 at release, worst piece of junk ive ever owned, i had the HTC Desire HD prior to that and it was a superb phone, the Samsung was just utter trash, plastic rubbish, i will never ever buy another one of their phones, so i moved to Apple, i like the Iphone but i will probably go back to HTC at some point, their phones are just extremely well made.

well lets wait and see ;)

I agree but I don't expect a backplate. The Titan cooler is a proper work of engineering at its best (not the cut down version they used for the 980/70). It really does a great job and whilst it is far from quiet, it does give quite a pleasing whoosh.

Dunno Greg, if i was spending £800+ on a GPU i would expect a backplate at a minimum just because, they look good and add extra strength to the card and mainly because if im paying £800+ i want everything !! EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, it has the look and feel of a premium product while being extremely well manufactured. I guess the downside of having a back plate is the potential incompatibility/decrease in airflow when running two cards in SLI. While Nvidia addressed this issue in the 9xx series design, it is still probably of benefit to remove the back plate completely on the bottom card, but then you're left with a set of screws that are too long to sit flush with the PCB. Maybe Nvidia have decided to do away with the back plate completely for the above or another reason. Will be interesting to see how the final card compares to the photographs we've seen so far :)

But the backplate will possibly be trapping the heat. I am far from knowing scientifically but 2 of my Titans had backplates and one didn't and with testing each, I could get the one without higher on the mem clocks than the 2 with.

Backplates don't interest me one bit. They can be a heat trap, hence why it won't come with one.

I guess when an aesthetic add on starts to get in the way or hold back performance you really have to question it's place.

Id just give it up if i was them :p

the lack of a backplate isn't exactly a deal breaker but it does spoil the look of the card..but what i'll deffo remove are those horrid white stickers/ bar codes....they look so ghastly.

does this card need to go into the top slot .... or will it go into one of the lower slots ?????
