AMD Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000) - *** NO COMPETITOR HINTING ***

I think there is some mix between cores and threads in this conversation but as mentioned history shows that ultimately if it is there it will get used.

CPUs aren't getting any faster clockspeed wise, they will only provide more performance by doing more per clock or running on software that can run across more cores, it is easier to add performance with more cores/threads or add specific specialist cores/co-processors for tasks, like GPUs, DSP, encryption etc.

Like everything in tech it starts small, looking back at my early proper PC machines, 1 core running less than 10Mhz, a few k of RAM, a 20Mb hard drive, the number of times I have heard through the years you'll never need more than blah blah blah.... is ridiculous, you always do.

With respect to threads its not just games but general use, I have a number of old laptops as I don't tend to sell them on, one of them 10yrs old that I just upped the CPU from a slow 2.5Ghz/2.23 base 2c/4t to a fast 3.46Ghz/3.2 base 2c/4t, it was a nice bump, I discovered the laptop could run a 3.2Ghz/1.87 base 4c/8t and being that old they were cheap so picked one up, it runs slower that the 2c cores by an entire Ghz on the whole but the machine is better to use for internet and office stuff than the 2c machines just because so much going on even in a simple browser these days, I sold the higher clocked 2c CPU on, it even feels quicker than my main laptop which runs a kabylake 2c/4t cpu which is many generations newer.

If I am not loosing a great deal of single core performance I will add cores, blimey these days your consoles, phones and tvs have ~8 threads.

I do agree right now for me I don't have a use for more than 8t ouside of work and hence why 1900x was the perfect chip for me, lots of IO I did need and enough CPU but should 3xxx eventually eclipse its performance massively I will happily buy one and all the extra cores that come with it even if it spends half its time doing nothing.

Most game devs can't write code for more than 4 cores even if their life depended on it. Don't expect 8core+ minimum requirements for games for another decade
Who gives 2 hoots about games? Besides, you are aware that the precedent for 8 core consoles starts next year, right? 8 core baseline is a lot closer than you think, especially with Intel's quad core stranglehold thoroughly broken.

People are actually starting to lose the plot here.
By what metric? The only reason mainstream PC software and games only need quad cores is because of Intel's stranglehold on that market, locking consumers in to quad core products. That stranglehold has been utterly broken, and we're already seeing games start utilising hex cores. The freedom is there now for devs to properly start threading their software, and games consoles go 8 core next year. The ball is rolling.

You're an idiot if you think 8 cores will become minimum spec overnight, but you're equally an idiot if you think it's a decade away or you're "losing the plot".

Did I quote your post? NO.
So **** off and stop calling me an idiot.

I never called you an idiot. 3rd party "you", not first person you. I thought that was quite obvious with basic comprehension skills, but the Internet is a difficult place to properly convey intent, so an apology is extended for what it's worth.

That being said, it's only the Internet. If you don't want to engage in conversation, don't post. If you don't want somebody to call you an idiot, don't post tripe. Doesn't matter 2 ***** if you quoted my post or not, I quoted yours because you posted publicly in a general discussion.

Consoles have had 8 cores from November 2013 with both the PS4 and Xbox One. Weak 8 cores, but 8 cores none the less.

I'm not taking a side here, just pointing that out if you weren't aware.
Well blow me down, my brain is a like a sieve today. Completely forgot they're 8 core.

Who actually cares about this silly argument? Just buy what your want, then replace it when it stops doing what you want it to do, as efficiently or as well as you expect it to.

More chipset fans. Got to say im not overly happy. Those little fans make a horrible noise. Alas, if the performance is there I will live with it.

Agreed. My Asus P6T Deluxe V2 had an optional chipset fan included but I never used it. The problem is tiny fans tend to make loads of noise, so it'll be interesting to hear reviews of different boards and whether it's a problem or not.

Clocks are weird, WCCFtech article makes no sense, referring to numbers being higher that aren't actually higher, etc. Useless info.
