Yup, you're totally right and that's how I should be thinking... I hope I dont get tempted basically! I did buy this motherboard wanting to get some mileage out of it and to be fair several generations of CPU upgrades is pretty decent and it's likely the reason that some x470 haven't budged much in price.

I was the same, I thought if I got a really good B450 board I could get quite a bit of use out of it and keep it for at least 2 different chips but it just seems better to buy a new board as I dont upgrade that often anyway.

Only paranoid negativity.

It's still a 12 core, dual CCX, dual chiplet design so it's going to have all the "shortcomings" of the existing 3900X, and I'm not sure the clock bumps will make that much of a difference against the niche use cases Intel still retain their lead in. As a result, enthusiasts will go "cool, nice to see TSMC's yields mature nicely so we can get this bump", the Intel sheep will go "lololol AMD do a refresh and STILL can't get 5GHz and beat us at gaming, which is the only thing that matters. Faildozer 2", and the casuals will go "there's an XT now?".

So I kinda see it as pointless, tbh.

And putting in some refreshes potentially doesn't bode well for Zen 3 landing on time, even with the Human Malware running about. OK, so Comet Lake is out, but who really cares? Those extreme FPS gamers will still buy Intel because it's the best for their purposes, the fanbois will still cry idiocy, and the non-partisan enthusiasts have dismissed it already. It's a detriment to AMD to do this refresh as it's going to be seen (whether intended or not) as a response to Comet Lake, and it's a response which likely won't address the deficits. Zen 3 is taking on Rocket Lake, so I'm not sure what can get served by AMD even acknowledging Comet Lake's presence.

Unless these clock bumps really do **** Comet Lake, pushing AMD in front before Zen 3 even lands.

Yeah thats fair enough. It does seem as if it'll close the already tiny gap between intel and AMD when it comes to gaming and maybe even surpass it. Mainly due to the fact that most games still prefer raw ghz speed over anything else.

Does seem a little odd that AMD release the XT variants so close to zen3 releasing though, cause most people im sure would rather just wait a couple months extra to get better tech

"so close" is still next year realistically. There's talk of the upper models getting a paper launch near the end of the year, but the full lineup isn't going to be available soon. I guess the refresh is better than nothing, it keeps AMD visible.

That being said, I just watched the Moores Law Is Dead video and he references some benchmarks in which the 10900K is only 7% ahead of the 3900X in gaming. If the 3900XT is getting clocked at 4GHz base, 4.8GHz boost with the IF running at native 2GHz then that's probably going to match, if not beat 7% deficit.

If this is the case then maybe it is worth it after all; AMD just dismisses the entire Comet Lake launch without even trying. Quite simply a mature manufacturing process yields performance gains with no actual work. Isn't that what Intel have been doing with 14nm?

I saw a livesteam at Linus Tech saying that AMD had dropped prices in the face of Intel's Comet Lake launch, and if that had been done before their review, their conclusions would have been quite different. $100 cut off the 3900X to twist the knife further into Intel.

Sure, Intel will still have customers and the very top single threaded performance for games, and the trick with the thinner chip/thicker IHS has done a lot of good things for heat/throttling, but the price difference now makes Comet Lake a lot less attractive (if it ever was).

where is 4k? surely he just made a new account?
The software powering this forum can IP block, so there is that. Also, if 4K8K was truly a troll in the end, it's possible he just got bored and never bothered.

I hope my suspicion isn't true and he did genuinely have a psychotic break. There was a point a few years ago where his slightly out-there and opinionated posts suddenly snapped into full-blown delusions. His writing style varied dramatically too, as if different people were posting from the same account.

IP blocks are not exactly effective nowadays with VPN subs for pennies or free. I did wonder were he had gone though :( some of the interactions were most amusing :D

Never even realised he got the boot, he had all the answers, "amd just need to do this for a gpu", "amd need to do this for a cpu". Are we sure he hasn't been headhunted by amd to steer them in the right direction?

Just did a search, his account is still showing as active...by that I mean it's not showing "permabanned".

Not knowing how this forum moderation works though, maybe they've been moderated in another fashion.

The poster hasn't been active for a while, however.

Would this mean 4000 series would be delayed to early 2021? How on earth would they get a decent supply of 5nm+ in time for later this year.

This would explain the zen 2 refresh and they might still be able to knock out a few of the high end Zen3 chips before the end of the year.

Well I said it before, AMD needs to throw everything they got at intel, including the kitchen sink :D
Although if this is true, I am sure the original 4000 series release date will be pushed back, maybe to December so they can still keep their "You will see Zen 3 in 2020" promise.
