AMD Zen 3 (5000 Series), rumored 17% IPC gain.

As evidenced by the 3300X

The 3300X only has 1 CCX, there is 0 Intercore latency, the result of that is this 4 core 8 thread Zen 2 CPU at 4.4Ghz is with in 3% as fast as a 4 core 8 thread 7700K at 5.1Ghz, the clock speed difference between 4.4Ghz and 5.1Ghz is 16%, so the IPC difference is +13% to the 3300X. (186 vs 193 FPS)

The 3100 is exactly the same as the 3300X, the ONLY difference is the 3100 takes its 4 cores from 2 CCX's, like all other Zen 2 CPU's, at the same clock speed it gets 162 FPS, the 3300X at the same clock speed is 14% faster.

In multi CCX versions Zen 2 has about 97% the IPC of Skylake in games, with a single CCX Zen 2 is about 113% of Skylake in games, in productivity workload Zen 2 in any form is... no surprise about 113% of Skylake. Skylake BTW is the same IPC as all its successors.

You picked the Overclocked 7700K result, not the stock version which is beaten by the stock 3300X.
 
Sorry if this is a repeated question, will there be new boards launching with Zen 3? Not that I need to buy the board now, it will just sit on a shelf but good to do the research in advance :D

I've been on the Intel side for a while, so the prospect of not having to update your board with every chip is a novelty. Think my last AMD chip was an Athlon 64...

There likely will be at some point but a X570 will run one no problem. Certain 450 models will support them too.
 
One more just to drive the point home.... he's overclocked the bolts off this 3300X, no way you would run it at 4.6Ghz 24/7, he did this to push it past the 9900KS....

Still, this is what Zen 2 can do when not hampered by Intercore latency.

Meh fine... :) we can't really know what the 7700K is running at stock, we do know its running 5.1Ghz overclocked.

The stock value and score is right there on the graph you posted, a few lines below the 3300X. No doubt though if you want to Overclockers the 7700K is probably the better buy but if you’re old like me you don’t bother with that kind of thing. Plug it in, does it work? Great! Let’s play some games!

I see it.

7700K Stock: 180 FPS.
3300X Stock: 182 FPS.
 
There likely will be at some point but a X570 will run one no problem. Certain 450 models will support them too.

For an inexpensive board the MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX boards will support Zen 3 with a BIOS update, all B550 boards will too.

An intel 10900k is better for games dispute being slower than a 3900/3950 in overall performance. It’s better because it’s individual cores are faster. This has been the case since Ryzen launched. People buy Ryzen because its good enough and offers better value with its cheaper overall platform costs.



Yes they do, despite their differences to things like IO and memory, the cores from the same family (e.g. Skylake) have the same underlying architecture and are directly comparable.

Which ever way you look at it, a processor with less cores but clocks higher is faster in games and always has been (bar the odd exception).

The best Zen 4000 processor for gaming will be which ever one clocks the fastest, that will likely be the 8 or 12 core version when it launches. The 16 core will be slower at games because of its slower clock speed.

If I can find an alternative to imgr to upload a picture to here I can prove you wrong. (anyone help?)

My friend has a 10900k and a 3900x, both perform the same in games.
The 10900k is clocked to 5.4ghz all cores no ht vs 4.4ghz all cores on the 3900x

Mine doesn't run all that often AFAICT, but I did end up changing motherboard to an MSI because the fan placement on MSI (and gigabyte IIRC) is a bit further away than the placement on ASRock boards. ASRock chipset fans effectively just pull in hot air straight from the graphics card. If you have a honking great graphics card...

This is why I went with MSI too.

I always thought X570 was pitched as enthusiast level. Wonder if the X590/X599 will have a constantly running chipset fan?

At a guess maybe the dual cluster chips can run a wider PCI-E link/links. 2x16 lanes of PCI-E 4.0 to the CPU and another 16x split between NVME and chipset?

If these new CPU’s can run the IF at 2000mhz you would have a uber desktop/ entry level Threadripper with but dual channel memory.

Not interested in x590 if its even more power hungry than x570

X570 I always considered a stopgap rush bodge. No doubt the motherboards are good, but chipset itself could be improved. B550 did that for most part, so now it makes sense to rekease a version of b550 with proper pcie4 chipset support
