*** AMD "Zen 4" thread (inc AM5/APU discussion) ***

Err, no. The price of a AM5 board, DDR5, and CPU is significantly more than a Z690 board, DDR4 and 12th/13th gen CPU.

There's no reality, apart from the deranged reality of the most loyal AMD fan, where the above isn't true.
Err, no. What happens in 2 years time when you want to upgrade your CPU. After just spending out on a Z690 mobo and DDR4 RAM you then have to go out and buy a second new motherboard and DDR 5 for the new CPU. This means you have bought 2 lots of RAm and motherboards. Buy AM5 now and you donot needtobuyanother motherboard orRam again for quite a few CPU upgrades

Please! Stop using logic this forum, esp with Dave.

With the pound recovering a bit and the posable price cuts, AM5 should look a lot better. I am still on a X370 and the main reason I want to upgrade is faster PCIe and more lanes for storage. I will hold out until after the prices drop and then get a B650e + 7900X + 32GB RAM (5600 OR 6000).

Yeah he did, but don't forget he needed that all important AVX-512 that AMD would never ever have.

If my memory serves correct, Dave bought an 11900k because he said AVX-512 was important and then switched to 13900k because AVX-512 isn't important.

He also flip flopped between needing a top tier ultimate gaming CPU to saying CPUs are irrelevant due to GPU bottlenecks.

To be fair, with the money you save going with intel, you can easily buy a new mobo and ram whenever you need to upgrade. A 13600k is faster than a 7700x and costs less, on a cheaper platform with cheap ddr4. There is not a single logical argument to go with amd this time around. The price isnt there, the performance isnt there, and platform longevity is irrelevant when you are actually paying extra for it.

I would 100% go with AMD I don't want to be stuck on ddr4 for the next 2-3 years
Flawed because if you plan to upgrade in 2-3 years it will end up costing you more instead of just doing CPU upgrade , instead of having to buy another board and replacing ddr4 with ddr5 that's gonna end up costing you more lol

7700x is currently at £369.98

You know that intel supports ddr5 right? Much faster than what amd supports. But i guess you want to get stuck with slow ddr5, OK

Haha I thought this discussion was about ddr4 ? Now changed it to ddr5 but the whole reason for ddr4 was the price difference ? Ok being able to use faster DDR5 ram or 3dv CPU I know which I would opt for I'll be able to drop in zen4 3d , zen 5 and zen 5 3d . So won't be on a dead platform I'm pretty sure I'll be kicking myself say I did intel build with 13600k-13700k and then seeing 3d

Personally waiting till zen4 3d if see nice gains plan to do build with b650e board

I see that B650E-F is £285.71 hopefully board prices keep on dropping

The whole discussion is about having the option to either save a truckload of money with ddr4 or go for actually fast ddr5 if you want to. You have neither of these options with am5 right now.

I agree with you that if your plan is to go with 3d,you should wait for them to release and not go for an am5 now and then upgrade to a 3d. Which brings us back to what i originally said, the only logical path RIGHT NOW is to buy intel. Amd doesn't make any freaking sense whatsoever.

The upgrade path myth of am4, which continues into am5 is completely overrated and exaggerated. You are paying the price of a new motherboard included in an amd cpu.

Well after global prices coming down, I have on order a 7950x lol. Asus TUF x670e plus board and some patriot viper venom RGB ram DDR5 ram 6000mhz. Question now is will my current cooler fit scythe mugen 5.

Is a 13600k with DDR4 faster than a 7700X with DDR5, though? Genuine question as I don't know. If it isn't, where's the logic behind your argument?

In the vast majority of workloads, even with DDR9, the 7700x is much slower than the 13600k. The core count difference is kinda huge so there is no way around that

upgrade path myth AM4 ? try telling that to these 2 and many many more

Thanks, thats exactly what i meant. The 3d cost 450 to 470 euros for the majority of its existence. With that money you could buy a 12700f + a brand new b660 mobo instead of keeping your 5 year old outdated out of warranty with no upgrade path b350.

In gaming no . in productivity yes , but you also have path of upgrading later to zen4 3d, zen5 and zen5 3d

or they could have dropped in the 5700x which is cheaper and not far behind in gaming we been here before, so will stop now hope we can agree with that
