Any news if Zen 5c will come to desktop? Zen 4c is server only, which is a shame.
The die shrink should make for good all core clock speeds.
why does desktop need it?
Still get latency on monolithic nodes as the cores are split into Numa nodes. This introduces latency.Call me old fashioned but I just prefer an old school monolithic cpu with no latency and allocation issues
But do the vast majority of desktop workloads benefit from this? I doubt it.The heat and TDP will be far less. Chips like the 9900X and 9950X won't need a PPT of 170W and 230W.
The CCD size also increases to 16 cores.
Those are massive benefits. A die shrink is always beneficial and is way more important than incremental architecture gains. Just ask nvidia about Blackwell.
Dev's target the mainstream, if the mainstream has 16 cores, that will be what gets the most attention. Right now, 4-8 cores probably get the most but it will shift to whatever the mainstream has. RT adds a big chunk of CPU overhead so as games add more RT the lower core CPU's will start to become less viable. But do the vast majority of desktop workloads benefit from this? I doubt it.
In a professional environment maybe, in server applications definitely. Gaming workloads definitely do not benefit (with a very few exceptions).
I would say Dev's target whatever number of cores the consoles have, especially since they're both x86_64 cpu's. Makes porting to PC a doddle then.Dev's target the mainstream, if the mainstream has 16 cores, that will be what gets the most attention. Dev's will still need to tune for the target platform or it will probably run like ****.I would say Dev's target whatever number of cores the consoles have, especially since they're both x86_64 cpu's. Makes porting to PC a doddle then.
It appears that the release date for the 9950X3D is March 11:

Was going to go 9900x3d but just came into an extra £110 so considering jumping up to a 9950x3d as it's the only part I haven't ordered. It appears that the release date for the 9950X3D is March 11:

I’m holding off for the 9950x3d, coming from the 7950x3d and I had no issues with that. Was going to go 9900x3d but just came into an extra £110 so considering jumping up to a 9950x3d as it's the only part I haven't ordered.
Also considering putting it towards upgrading my 3 1080p monitors to 3 1440p ones later in the year.
I'm coming from a i7 5960x. So either the 9900x3d or 9950x3d is going to be a nice increase for me.I’m holding off for the 9950x3d, coming from the 7950x3d and I had no issues with that.

I sold my full system and am buying another with the 5090 so might as well get the 9950x3d.I can't see much point in going 7950X3D to 9950X3D. It's a pretty marginal boost, mainly just a clock speed bump.
