*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

17th of January by most accounts.

My monitor has been giving up the ghost for about a year now so I want to replace it at some point. I'm thinking of investing in a new 1440p setup which'd probably require a new motherboard and CPU so the timing of Zen is pretty good for me. Even if it disappoints, Kaby Lake is just around the corner too.

Hmmm....

Special Zen SR7 8C/16T $499 = £481
Zen SR7 8C/16T $350 = £336
Zen SR5 6C/12T $250 = £240
Zen SR3 4C/8T $150 = £144

Not impressed with SR7 reached 1.5V at 4.2GHz as you cant get it stable for 24/7 and 5GHz on LN2? Forget it!

SR7 8C/16T is as fast as 6C/12T 6850K but in games 6700K are slight faster or matched 6850K performance.

SR7 no OC or 7700K OC... though decision! Will wait to read reviews first.

3.5GHz. Starting to get interesting...

Even if it's the £500 overclocking model? you'd be better off with an overclocked SR3/SR5 in my view assuming they clock higher. AMD really need to be hitting 4.5ghz overclocked with SR3/SR5 or they're just going to be the poor mans choice again.

Also, why aren't there special models of SR3/SR5? is the SR7 special just the better binned silicone? so all models will be completely unlocked then?

Yes. 'Starting to look interesting', in that they're heading in the right direction.

Look like some AMD Zen slides were leaked, it came from hardforum but both HardOCP and hardforum were down now.

AMD SR7, SR5 and SR3 CPUs will be simple called XP and APUs will be called AP. ZScaling is AMD own version of Intel hyperthreading.

It seemed the flagship SR7 XP 813K, SR5 XP 613K and SR3 AP 413K will be the only 3 unlocked processors have ZScaling.

^^^ gone the same way as intel by paying more for an unlocked chip, wonder if you be able to clock with the blck.

The only chips AMD had which were all unlocked are the current FX line.

The Phenom came in locked and more expensive unlocked (Black Edition) chips.
--------------

Anywho, 6 Core 12 Thread for $290.... shut-up and take my money!

I call fake on the chart.

No 4 core chips with no GPU? And only the unlocked chips have hyperthreading?

And also the Zen APUs aren't out for ages. The Excavator based AM4 ones aren't even out yet.

Also also, what does hyperthreading have to do with the TDP? Seems so fake to me.

There's no way AMD would force prosumer people (i.e. people who need powerful CPUs but not going for workstation CPUs, like video editors) to get the 'gamer' chip in order to get 6/12 or 8/16. There will UNDOUBTEDLY be locked 6/12 and 8/16 choices.

Its odd but because of that i would lean more to it being real.

If you wanted to fake something like that the natural course you would take is 8 core, 6 core, 4 core, conventional wisdom.

I would suggest all cores are from a single 8 core 16 Thread SKU and at this point they just can't warrant a 4 core chip out of that SKU for less than $190.
Intel has enough 4 core chip variants, too many for AMD to compete with.

Instead they want to shift sub $190 chips as APU's.

AMD are doing something a little different to what Intel are, its actually quite clever.
