*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

The number for the APU's on that chart tie up with the Bristol Ridge APU's that AMD recently announced, so I reckon that is what they are.

"Dynamic turbo linked to TDP not core usage."

That sounds interesting

"User-adjustable TDP limits with AMD unlocked"

It does make it sound like they are going for a completely different path to Intel with regards to how the chips will be locked down.

Just how it all pans out is going t be interesting indeed.

Do we know yet if AM4 socket will be compatible with AM3 and below coolers? I have just ordered a noctua nh-d15s and plan on getting ZEN early next year. I know noctua will send me a free fitting kit but its a bit of a ball ache waiting.....

The fact that Noctua are sending out fitting kits would suggest no.

They should come with AMD's new wraith cooler, they do a good job cooling the old FX CPU's so should do really well cooling these.

I've never been an early adopter of new hardware but I know theres a lot of you guys that do.
What are the chances of an matx motherboard to go with zen on release?
I really don't want to buy a new case.

If the prices on those slides are even close it puts the 613k between i5 and i7 pricing for 6 cores and 12 threads - that would have me really interested.

Definitely keeps the interest level up in these.

Pulseammo, I did e-mail Alpenfohn as I got an Alpenfohn Matterhorn waiting here for my new build, and as I haven't made up my mind if I wait for Zen or get something by end of the year (depending on finances) I thought I wanted to find out.

From their reply to my question:
"thank you very much for your message.

The AM4 socket will have a different hole spacing than the old AM3. That means you will need new mounting parts if you want to keep your Matterhorn Black for your new AM4 processor.

We are going to offer free mounting parts for all our CPU-coolers as soon as AM4 will be released.

If its finally released and you need those new mounting parts, please use following form:

If you have any other question, feel free to contact us.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / With best regards

And as it looks now with the new AMD info popping up I will probably wait until end of January to get my new computer so I can see how well the Zen performs.

If the slides are accurate, the main thing that (still) worries me is clock speeds. If the 6 core can't get higher than 4 GHz then Intel's 4 cores are still going to be better for gaming (even with similar IPC). Without a 4-core part to compete for many months they may not be able to make much headroom in that space.

Of course they might clock to 4.6 GHz and then there's no issues but I kinda doubt it if their max turbo out of the box is 3.6 GHz.

I'm liking the rumours of 4 core, 8 thread 3.something GHz for $140.

Been sniffing around for a 2nd hand i7 setup but a decently performing zen at that price could really shake up the market a bit.

Yup, with Intel's 6 core doing what, 4.5Ghz? it would be 12.5% faster per core, and that fine.

its why you pay $460 for the i7 6800K

I'm good with that, AMD's equivalent might not clock as high but its also $170 less expensive, we have a real choice.

This is my major bugbear with CPUS. It's that deciding between many cores, and core speed.

Like many I both game and render videos. So there isn't a CPU "for me". I would be sacrificing something what ever I do.

Clock speed isn't everything, if i was to run my CPU at 4Ghz i doubt i would really notice the difference.

I think in the near future threads rather than single threaded performance is going to become dominant in importance even for gaming.

True that. But I still play a lot of FSX. And single core clockspeed is god in that. CPU brings in all the textures and essentially determines FPS. Until I shake my 20 year Flight sim habit then Im stuck hunting clockspeed.
