*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Two words sum up the failure that was the Fury X event.

"overclockers dream"

Two words that I am sick of hearing: "Overclocker's dream".

Honestly, why this weird obsession with overclocking. It made sense for a short window during which new chips were so unpredictable in quality that the manufacturers had to clock them significantly lower than their average potential to avoid a high return rate. And during this window some discovered they could get more performance out the chips, sometimes significantly more. It became a passion for some.

Those days are largely gone and even during that window it would have made no sense for a manufacturer to advertise something as an "overclocker's dream" because all that they would be saying was "we're releasing this configured product way below where we'd like to release it and below where it would be best for most people." The thing was uttered in an ill-thought out moment by an employee who blundered off-script and never mentioned again.

And in every AMD graphics thread ever more, some wag starts quoting it as if it means anything or has any bearing whatso****ingever. For Christ's sake! I would add a Mad smiley to this post but it looks so ****ing cute in its little Christmas hat...

It was never advertised as an "overclockers dream" its just something one of AMD's staff blurted out on an event stage.

Its one sentence uttered once by one indervidusl but never endorsed by AMD as a company that as usual has a very volatile army of hardware enthusiasts blowing it all way out of proportion.

I like the name, just like Sandy Bridge and 2500k it will be interchangeable between Zen and Ryzen depending on what you are talking about.

Thats just the timer, sorry, the event is on Twitch https://www.twitch.tv/amd

I was looking here! http://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations/new-horizon

Thanks for the twitch link

Ah twitch link excellent. :)

It looks like we didn't need to sign up for the stream, like we assumed we did earlier in the thread. (same link that Pants just reposted)

Problem with Zens launch will be the pound, and the 5820s launch price. At least for me.

It's unrealistic for me to expect a better chip than the 5820 if Zen is priced at the 5820's launch price, because the pound's crapped itself since then thanks to Brexit.

In the US there will be no problem though.

Thats a good point, it could be 15% more, £345
