*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Credit should be given to Lisa though I guess.
She's steered them through a rough period.

As much as I'm very much "meh" about the 480X with it offering nothing over my 290X, a lot of that is down to the UK pricing of it, it's a solid product for its US Dollar price point.

I can definitely see Vega/Zen being a popular choice.

Don't forget that Zen has been in the works since before Lisa. AMD stock tanked under Rory Read but he did a lot of what was required. He canned large scale development of Bulldozer, put in plan a new architecture and got the best guy in the industry to design it. Keller joined AMD in 2012, Su took over as CEO in 2014.

Rory Read was tasked with getting a new architecture underway and tightening AMD belts while diversifying the company sharply to mitigate losses and keep AMD ticking over till Zen was ready. Don't forget that prior to Read and the semi custom part of the business they were nearly 100% dependent on PC sales and without the console wins they got they would have been in trouble. That was incredibly important stable income to tide them over.

He maybe cut back too much on GPU development, maybe it was simply required in the short term to survive into the longer term. Either way he got rid of a lot of people which judging by how Zen is shaping up and how the RTG group is doing in the past two years, a successful belt tightening.

Lisa Su has done great, but a fairly large portion of the plans just coming to their final stages were most certainly started by Rory Read. If AMD were operating with the same staff, same products and same development plans as when he started as CEO AMD would probably be out of business by now.

Read will be forgotten as he started the plans that to the massive majority were invisible till long after he left. Su will probably be over estimated but has still done a very very good job.

Keller... if Zen is as good as it looks, that man will only be even more in demand. Hopefully he gets done with his latest project in a couple of years and goes back to AMD to make the next architecture. IE join in 2-3 years and next architecture 7-8 years from now sounds about right.

Ahh this is one of those annoying times. AMD look to have revealed a killer do I buy or wait for intels response :(.

I could certainly do with the extra couple cores.

whys that? intel and amd are the only 2 horses in this race.

Because I wanted to see how it compared to the FX line up as it stands.

The FX line up appears to be absolutely terrible with Blender by the results here, the 8C 8T PD chips perform at basically half a 4C/8T Haswell, which is absolutely terrible.
