*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Speaking as someone who held off on going for a Sandybridge i7 2600K, (a CPU I still have), until Bulldozer was released, only to have my hopes based upon 'promising' pre release blarb dashed by actual hands on benchmarks and reviews.....

.......what is so different this time around?

I am not looking to upgrade myself, but I do have a friend who is wanting a new build. We had decided on the i5 6600K, but I advised that he should hold off a while and wait for for the Zen reveal. Now that we have had it, I still see a glaring lack of concrete information that might help me make a decision on which way to go.

Cherry picked benchmarks, games not benched, but only running on two systems, no release date and no bloody pricing.

My mate is firmly in the 200 GBP bracket for a CPU. Are AMD going to offer a viable option at that price point and if so, then when? Jan? Feb? March?

I am that ****ed off with the lack of good information that I am tempted to tell him just to plump for the 6600K. It will probs perform better in 90% of scenarios than it's Zen counterpart anyhow and it wouldn't surprise me at all if 3-4 years down the line, DX 12 titles still don't really make that great use of multiple cores/threads, which would be the Zen counterparts only real advantage.

Pricing there but... AMD's mouthpiece speaking so, bucket of salt required :D

(basically) a 5960X (on paper) for $350...

as opposed to the inevitable 5% increase at best for intel with a 50% increase in price , and a new socket for each cpu launch then huh

Yeah, that doesn't happen. I don't need fanboy agenda.

Whereas AMD delays do, all the time. It's a running joke, if AMD give a date they miss it. From hardware to software, to even video's.

AMD have to make this launch perfect, and by giving themselves that extra 60 days, I think it's a good thing. Everyone knows that they're expected to launch January, that we're likely to see more at CES. But for once I feel like they've got things planned.

the only cpu tests (lisa's bit) looked good tho
matching that $1000 chip using less power with all the money intel have to develop stuff..go amd! :)

If thats legit pricing (assuming we dont get bent over more than normal in the UK) that's bloody good.

Potentially my next system is going back to full AMD :).

I am probably being thick but why do we want lower power CPUs? Would there be much performance gained from running at higher wattage? Obviously you generate more heat but it's not like we don't already have coolers more than capable of it.

I missed this.
Was there a release date?
How does it stack up against the 6900K in both single and multithreaded?

Hopefully we'll see independent reviews soon if still Q1.

well looks like intel just lost a lot of sales between now and zen release, after watching that video my plans have changed, now i wont be buying 2 x £500 6700k bundles on the 28th from ocuk for 2 pc builds . instead i will wait for zen release and then decide.

hope the fat greedy ******** at intel get a good kicking from Amd, they have been robbing us for far too long.

Same here all we need is a great price and good stock levels.

Doubt Intel can magic up anything new.
Price drop and changing of tiers.

It depends whether AMD adheres to current pricing structures or goes with their own.

Depends how long they want to hold off on Skylake-X tbh. Currently Q3/4 2017 when originally safely expected it to drop instead of Broadwell-E.

And that'll be pretty much what they've got now but a few percent better.
If AMD launch a solid product at solid pricing, then all Intel can do is lower their own prices.

But that AMD event was *too* good for me. They'll be a caveat somewhere. As long as they don't need AMD specific optimisations in software (Due to their announced feature) then I'm all on board with buying a Zen at launch at the moment.

No release date.

And we really dont know much about actual performance yet. Looks to have potential, but then again, even Bulldozer did as good or better than Sandy Lake in some benchmarks and applications when it first came out.
