*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Bulldozer > Piledriver > Steamroller > Excavator would have all been dribbling improvements had AMD not cut their losses at Piledriver.
IIRC Piledriver was maybe 5-10% faster clock-for-clock than Bulldozer but they also increased their clock speeds by a good margin, similar to what Intel did with Skylake. Steamroller was between 10 and 20% depending on the multithreaded nature of the benchmark (presumably a ~10% efficiency improvement to their CMT implementation). Excavator is another 10% or so on average. Assuming an average of 10% per iteration, that's still better than what Intel have managed since Haswell. Of course AMD's starting point was so far back that it made no difference.

Is there anything we really know about Zen+ other than that one IPC graph that suggests they are confident they can improve IPC by a good margin still? I'm hoping Zen will be an excellent foundation for the next 4 years rather than a flash in the pan, especially since AM4 should last a while providing a nice upgrade path for Ryzen owners, particularly for those with 4/6 core chips.

the entire "Intel are raising prices" thing is pretty fallible.

Ahem :P

That's the point, the i3K is more the double the price of it's predecessor, even factoring in inflation/currency/VAT changes it's a ridiculous increase. Intel are hoping to extort customers as much as possible while they have the market to themselves :(

Compare that Clarkdale dollar price to that i3k dollar price (launch pricing) it you want to have a valid argument for a price rise.

I agree with that particular instance you'll see one, but you're sensationliaing it.

K, $117 vs $179

The funny thing is, back at launch I paid OCUK ~£240 for an i3 clocked to 4.2GHz complete with decent motherboard, performance heatsink and 2x2GB of decent DDR3 (which was the standard RAM config for gamers back them). And now Intel want £180+ just for a clockable i3 XD

Zen going to drop in February 'according to rumor'.

Am def going Zen after seeing the 7700K xD

I wouldn't commit quite yet. We don't really have any independent reviews / benches yet. Nor do we have pricing.

What we do have is wild speculation that the 8 core 16 thread CPU will cost the same as Freddo bar, and will almost match a $1000 intel CPU (well, the last one might not be so wild, but I would await independent testing first).

Yeah will be review / price dependent, but as long as one of the Zen chips can match my old 6700K in gaming and beat it in workstation type stuff, movie encoding etc I will pick one up. I doubt I will get the very highest end chip. Prob a couple down from top.

You seen how much Freddo bars have increased? Dread to think how much they will be in 6 months time. I remember them being 5/10p!!

What did the ******* frog do? Get a mortgage and have kids???

They're probably only Freddos by name since Kraft came in a wrecked up the place.

Edit: Now this is how you go off-topic!
