*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Interesting read https://dailygazette.com/article/2017/02/09/globalfoundries-will-expand-production

So GF expanding its 14nm plant by 20% going online beginning of 2018... just in time for Zen+ and other AMD goodies :)

"GlobalFoundries has invested $13 billion at Fab 8 since construction started in 2009, the vast majority of that money for sophisticated manufacturing tools, a single piece of which can cost $100 million. Fab 8 is equipped to process up to 60,000 silicon wafers per month, and an expansion would be on top of that. Each wafer can produce hundreds of computer chips."

I believe the writer of the article guesses that Fab 8 investment is about 14nm.

However is on the news since October 2016, that Fab 8 was going to expand early 2017 to start the 7nm process, with plan to have finalised the specs for the 7nm process by H2 2017 and start full production H2 2018.

Yeah, it's not a real expansion, ie floor space to install more equipment. When you move to say 14nm, you move out some of the 28nm equipment and put in 14nm, so some lines are 14nm, some are 28nm. They are saying they are putting in more 14nm equipment, but not more equipment in general. So maybe 70% of the output is 14nm and they are upping that to 84%.

The site in Malta has pre-approved planning application for two further 60k fabs on the same site. The initial design was for three large fabs and the infrastructure to support them, ie roads to get there, water supply, sewage works that was part of the approval deal but also provides them with the clean water they need for it to work. When it's got all three fabs built it will be a ridiculous site with ridiculous output, likely well over 180k wafers.

It somewhat sucks, as a AMD fan, it feels a bit wrong that I think basically nothing AMD make is made in Dresden any more. According to that article it's switching/switched to 22nm, which is I presume the FDX process, which is iirc SOI + finfet.

So Zen is 14nm, Vega/Polaris are 14nm and that is only done in New York now. I mean it makes no difference but the Dresden fabs were AMD till 2008 or 2009.

I hope msi manage to get and itx board to market. Right now I think they my only hope of getting one day one :p

It was bad enough trying to get a Z170 itx board at launch. Took far too many weeks to get my board and even then it wasn't from my expected source.
There were two biostar itx boards announced quite a while back though they had no picture so I wouldn't expect them at launch day.

Yeah, we had confirmation from the as rock rep here that they won't have itx at launch and they think post people will be the same... I'm still trying to be hopeful. But realistically it looks like probably a month or so after launch before they start appearing assuming all goes well

I know what the Wraith CPU cooler is, but any guesses what this Wraith "Spire" cooler that's being mentioned with the R7-1700 is about?

Yeah, because in super heavy AVX loads Intel don't downclock the chip because their TDP doesn't come close to covering max speeds with AVX 512... oh wait....

AVX throttling is only static on server platforms. AVX negative offset ratio on X99 requires user intervention to work, and even then, the function only works correctly when VID is left in auto.

With that in mind, I doubt many users here see any throttling on X99.

So as I haven't owned an AMD based computer since about 2006 what are the good AMD motherboard manufactures who are likely going to make the best AM4 ultra high end overclocking motherboards? I currently have an Asus Sabertooth X79 motherboard which I like so I'd like something that is just as high end for Ryzen.

I know we don't have any information on releases yet but you should be able to tell based on models already released.

I've grown to distrust Asus motherboards. Entirely anecdotal and statistically non-representative, but as you asked... I have found them a bit more unambitious in features too, which I think is more objective. At the time I couldn't find one by Asus that supported M.2. and ended up with a Gigabyte motherboard I like a lot. Unless there's some dramatic shift, I'll be buying Gigabyte or ASRock for the foreseeable future. The latter especially is the only company that is willing to do off the wall ideas like that one designed to RAID four PCI-Ev3 SSDs.

Whereas Asus have a lot of goodwill with me, having run my 2500K beyond 4.4ghz for 6 years...

Fair enough. With any company that sells as much as AMD there are goging to be positive and negative experiences out there. They're a market leader so they must be doing something right.

I've got quite simple motherboard needs. My most required need is stability. I do a lot of important work on my computer and crashes are a really bad thing. Other than that I need as many USB 3.0 / 3.1 ports as possible, 2 PCI-Express x16 slots, 4 SATA ports, M.2 NVMe slot and gigabit ethernet oh and onboard sound that is reasonable quality. I also want to be able to overclock my CPU nicely.

I'll bear in mind ASRock as you are the second person to recommend them. Thanks :).
