*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Probably not a bad little chip that, i have seen a lot of people say they are very happy with it.

@ £60 and overclockable it certainly beats spending £100 on a locked i3

Yeah, I've been nothing but impressed with the system. A 4.6Ghz quad core and FM2+ mobo for about the price of a locked i3.

If Zen can performance no worse in any scenario I personally use than my 4770K, and can in cases perform better, then it's a winner for me depending on price, given my 4770K's not exactly a spring chicken anymore.

So something with overclocked 2500k kinds of performance ;)

Mine is still giving everything a run for it's money. Pretty sure it would reck most 4770k's. Unless you have a week 18 jobbie.

Despite recently going to a 6600k, if AMD come out with Haswell level IPC and more cores I'd happily move to one if DX12 plays nice with multi core cpus.

More recent rumours have it at broadwell ipc levels. considering it was said to be performing better than expected and over the 40% ipc increase they were aiming for.

The exact same hype was trotted out for Bulldozer.

"a source within AMD says it's gonna be well fast" = fake leak

Just like when ministers do strategic leaking to the press.

Assuming AM4 is backwards compatible if AMD release motherboards months before the processors then that's a sure fire sign that it sucks, AMD already pulled that trick with 990FX and Bulldozer. I remember everyone (myself included) rushing out to buy 990FX because Bulldozer was going to rock.

Does it not use a different number of pins? So I'd assume not backwards compatible.

As with everything in IT, I'll judge it off forum post benchmarks, and maybe some reviews with a bucket of salt on hand.

AM4 is supposed to launch with the Bristol Ridge APUs (Carrizo (Bulldozer lineage) based architecture), before the Zen CPUs appear at the end of the year.

It's not really backwards compatibility, like AM3+ was with existing AM3 CPUs, and AM3 was for some of the AM2 CPUs.

That makes no sense at all to me. You are going to have to explain how you come to that conclusion.

They sold as many 990FX motherboards (and by extension chipsets) as they could before everybody was made aware that Bulldozer was dire, which meant also that a lot of people were already invested in the platform by the time Bulldozer arrived because it was going to be uber and all that according to AMD.

So if they release AM4 motherboards months before Zen is revealed I would avoid them like the plague until Zen performance is revealed and don't fall for the AMD hype/lies.

Why would you buy a motherboard with a new chipset before the CPU you want is released?
Dont get me wrong i was waiting for bulldozer as well and was left disappointed.

You kind of have a point, but I still don't see why a motherboards backwards compatibility has anything do with Bulldozer falling short of unlocked i7 performance. It's not like if AMD had dropped that feature then performance would have increased.

I'm buying AM4 and Bristol as long as the price make sense. Why Zen come I'll upgrade to that if the price makes sense. If Zen offers nothing then I'll stick with Bristol Ridge, until Zen2.

That's an interesting perspective.

He's on about smoke and mirrors, not B/C.
At any rate, if Zen's a viable upgrade from my 4770K, then I'll get it, that's not a lot to ask for.
