*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Witcher 3 is fine on Polaris though - I tried it with my same old ancient CPU two weeks ago.

I was getting around 45FPS with an RX470 4GB at those settings with tessellation to the max and Hairworks to the max(GTX1080 is 80ish FPS). An RX480 8GB should be somewhat faster due to the 15% extra shaders, more VRAM and higher speed RAM.

Remember this is not with a very new CPU either.

The Polaris cards definitely seem to handle tessellation and Gameworks effects better than older ones.
That's true, polaris has dedicated hardware to help with Tessellation.

Even then Hairworks hits performance so damn hard. I'll never forget how great it felt to get SLI 980Ti so I could max the game at 1440p with Hairworks.

Then came Tomb Raider and Pure Hair, a 4fps hit for better hair was great.

Boost in fps at 3.8Ghz but looks like the zen quad and likely the hex chips are going to top out at 4Ghz. So not the best for gaming.

It will certainly outlast the current i5's as I've said previously these Intel's are pretty much maxxed out now. Who knows how they will cope in say 12 months time. Anyone looking to buy right now should certainly consider ryzen.

Reckon £170 is a fair price for the 1400? Can't help but think it could be cheaper.
Could be cheaper and I suspect will be in the EU in some places.

Problem is do you want to deal with an RMA to there?

Even if they top out at 4ghz, which was expected they're amazing value for money over the 7500,7600 and 7700k for any budget gamer. Which lets face it, is most gamers.

I'm interested in how well the Wraith cooler with the 1400 copes with an OC though.
If it's worse than the Spire, it might be worth buying the 1500x at £20 more
That comes with the same Wraith Spire cooler as the 1700. So will easily handle a 4ghz overclock.
Which saves money on an after market cooler.

Guy in vid said he had to max out the stock coolers fan to keep it below 80c at 3.8Ghz 1.35v.

Something must be off there, because 75°C is the maximum temperature for Ryzen chips and my understanding is that they shut down automatically over that (though I guess that may depend on the motherboard). For what it's worth, I have mine at the same voltage and hover around the low 60s with a Noctua NH-U14S, which is obviously a bit better than the Spire, but not nearly 20°C I wouldn't have thought.

95c is the max I think.

480CF @ 1.3ghz beating by a big margin an overclocked TXP, and consequently the GTX1080Ti on a Gameworks game in DX12?
Costing half the money compared to the 1080Ti and 1/3 the money of the TXP?
That made my evening :)

Me too just mind boggling

well the true test would be a retest of current drivers on a Ryzen pc (mem @3200)... sli 2 x 1060 ? vs cf 2 x 480 in dx 12 in the tomb raider then will see if one needs to place a tin foil hat on....but wait nvidia do not allow sli on 1060 .... i wonder why ???

I thought the offset only applied to the X chips. The 1700 has the better cooler though?
The 1700 does have a better stock cooler than the 1400. Hence me stating "If not that's hotter than a 1700 at 4Ghz on its stock cooler. "

Which goes to my previous comment that if the 1400's cooler isn't good enough, pay the extra £20 for the 1500X and get the same Wraith Spire as the 1700. That cooler is known to handle 3.9-4.0Ghz on the 1700; which shouldn't be an issue for the quadcore 1500X then.

Apparently AdoredTV is doing a follow up video with a 1060 and 480.
The 1060's lack of SLI is probably an easy explanantion. Would you buy a £550 1080 if you could SLI 2x1060's for £450 or less and get the same performance or better?

RX 470 stonking a GTX 1060 at DX12.

Clear from the video that the AMD DX12 driver is allowing more use of the CPU threads leveraging the power of the GPU which it boosting its usage.

Nvidia have a lot of work to do on DX12 or they will be left for dust.
