*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

best air cooler for a 1700x in terms of value for money? the cheaper the better however i will pay say a few quid more if warranted. for example i'm currently using a hyper 212X (£25) on a i5 7600K as it's a beast for the money. is there anything as good as that for AM4?
Probably a Raijintek Tisis or a Phanteks TC14PE, they seem to be the cheapest dual tower coolers and are close to D15 performance wise.
You can find some performance numbers here: https://www.anandtech.com/show/9415/top-tier-cpu-air-coolers-9way-roundup-review/12

I would say the opposite, it is great publicity for them. Would be nice to have the option to attempt an unlock like with previous gen chips.
It'd be great publicity if suddenly owners of R3/R5 chips could unlock cores. That isn't the case here, it's a mistake on one/some batches of chips. That's not good publicity.

I don't have a 212, I have nothing. A 212 with a bracket is also £35.

i might go with noctua for extra cooling

Oh, sorry then, I confused myself :D

It probably wouldn't be a bad cooler then, but I'm not sure if you can easily get to 3.9/4Ghz with it. I have a Scythe Mugen 4 with 2x Corsair SP120 fans right now and I'm limiting myself to 3.8Ghz with 1.3v because my 1700 pushes to 70C at times.

Looks like some of the price drops for Ryzen are starting to happen - the Ryzen 5 1600x is now £190,the Ryzen 7 1700x is now £290 and the Ryzen 7 1800x is now £390. The Ryzen 7 1600 has only gone down to £180 though, and the Ryzen 3 1200 is £90 too.

And they're really starting to look tempting at that price. A 1600x with 1080ti build is relatively cheap and you'd be sorted at 1440p.

I wish the ROG itx board was available though....They're apparently doing an x370 itx!

I only have an m.2 and gpu connected to a motherboard so hate having a big tank of a case and motherboard.

I saw the x370-i mentioned elsehwere http://ipcgaming.com/asus-x370i-b350i-gaming-mitx/

It could be a mistake, even still I think I could live with a b350 board, they both overclock and there's no real features I need on the x370 chipset but I tend to go for the highest end chipset when possible (intel mentality I guess lol)
I believe the X370 boards are more likely to have higher VRM counts, but considering Ryzen can't be clocked to **** anyway they probably aren't worth the extra expense for most people. Unless of course you plan on putting a 2nd or 3rd gen Ryzen chip in and you think those will clock higher and you want to future proof your rig.

To be fair though, it's not all that expensive to get that extra future proofing. The X370 Taichi, which is often touted amongst the best high end boards, still costs less than my X58 P6T Deluxe V2 did in 2009.

just ordered a 1700 for £252 :D

The prices in the US from certain retailers are already much lower than the recent price drops. (bear in mind these are without tax applied!!)

1800X for $349 (price drop was to $400 I think for example).
1700 for $259
1600 for $189

And then you get a discount on motherboards if you buy these along with a board.... Pretty impressive pricing.

As a totally different side note, I am very much hoping that the next process improvement in February for Ryzen will bring a 10% boost at the same frequencies. That would hopefully translate to around 180 single thread R15 result. Obviously that is being optimistic, but would obviously be nice if that happened.

Putting a new post instead of adding a second edit, because I want to understand the upcoming process improvement form AMD (pinnacle ridge).

Is it expected to be an IPC improvement at the same clock speed as Ryzen V1, or just that it will be improved clock speeds available?

I ask because AMD currently use 14nm right? And the new process will be 12nm? So there 'should' hopefully be an increase in increased IPC (more instructions per cycle at the same clock speed).
