AMD Zen3 event thread

Zen 3, where they can finally move ahead and say they beat intel at everything?
"Turing moment" ?

You're having a laugh. Their market share is just going to keep going up.
having the gaming crown means nothing without good pricing, just look at What was happening to intels market share.

AMD were 10% behind but with better pricing and people went with AMD yet this time around AMD are 5% ahead with worse pricing . Now if people were willing to forgo a 10% advantage for better pricing the last time around then don't you think people would be even more willing to forgo a 5% lead this time around in favour of better pricing?.

PC gaming has always carried a premium. Wonder if these are the same people that complain that a. 2080ti was too much.
You mean that incredibly reasonably priced 2080Ti? Yeah I can't fathom why anybody would have complained about that one...

AMD created a problem for themselves with all CPUs being unlocked in that they can't make them significantly different in performance once overclocked.
That gives them much less leeway to release lower priced SKUs and make the money they want.
To get around that without outraging the entitled they can try just releasing top end SKUs and let the cheapskates buy Zen 2 or a lesser core count.
That may be seen as the lesser of the two evils as high prices can be rationalised as we've seen here, but removing OCing on lesser SKUs would lead to nerd rage.
Of course like most things on this forum this is speculation.

There likely will be other SKUs, but stock availability on 3xxx parts is still good at the moment. Some suppliers even still have a fair quantity of 1xxx and 2xxx parts still available

Ah yeah fair point ... I wonder if the 3xxx stuff will get a ton cheaper or not when the 5xxx bits are out.

On this we agree, it was massively out of step with every other Nvidia release. That said I remember a time I was priced out of PC gaming. Hopefully they all remember that the money is in volume sales not to wealthy enthusiasts

How long do you think after the release of these chips, motherboards will come with the bios to support them straight from the shops? MSI mortar and tomahawk had a sticker on them saying 3000 series supported, i wonder if manufactuires will do that aswell for the 5000 series?

Lots of boards can be updated without a CPU now so that's not as much of an issue as it used to be. I'm sure newly manufactured ones will be marketed as 5000 compatible.

cool, im aiming to upgrade my i7 6700k next year with possibly a 5950x but im waiting on reviews as im not sure if it will be much of an upgrade.

Which is why I believe AMD have dropped the ball this time around by not offering customers the more sensibly priced 5600 and 5700X as the majority don't care about that extra 100 or 200 MHz but instead want value for money. This has been the key factor in driving up AMDs market share.

Lets be honest here.

I'm thinking maybe i'll upgrade to an 8 core CPU, i wouldn't get an 8 core Zen 2, i already have a Zen 2 theres no point.

So, the 5800X is probably going to end up £430, that's expensive and i'm not paying over £400 for an 8 core CPU no matter how good it is.

10700K, 8 cores 16 threads, the 5800X is in every conceivable way better, i'm also not going to be able to overclock it as far as it can with my £50 AIO, it wouldn't be able to cope with the heat.

But its £375, that's a significant difference in price and its by no stretch a bad CPU. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/inte...ocket-lga1200-processor-retail-cp-68r-in.html

Look, not only have AMD brought the cost of high performance CPU's down, Until AMD came along with Ryzen we were paying £300 for 4 core 8 thread CPU's and it was AMD who forced Intel to rethink that, AMD's CPU's are now better than Intel's.

I would like to see AMD reap the rewards of what i have no doubt was a lot of very hard work, i'm happy for them to put the prices up a bit, i was expecting it, i think we all were.

So $550 for the 12 core 5900X, fine its $100 more than what the 3900X was, that's the sort of price hike i was expecting, its still good value at that and lets face it its going to humiliate the 10900K.

The 5600X, at $300 i think its just slightly too high but acceptable, its clearly a better CPU than the 10600K and the same sort of price.

The 5800X however its £30 to £50 too much money.

This. If AMD choose not to release a 5600 or a 5700X (soon) then they will be massively shooting themselves in the foot.

A bit disappointed in the launch due to the prices. I'm building my new gaming PC in November and was sure going for a Ryzen 5000 series CPU would be a no brainer, but it looks like it's going to be a some brainer. I'll probably be going for the 3070 RTX (stocks permitting) or the Big Navi equivalent, so I guess I'll have to wait and see benchmarks and work out what the best value option is which won't bottleneck the GPU @ 1440p

I think they will but just not yet. Take the high end cash, sell off older stock. The 3700X took a lot of sales that may have gone to a higher end SKU otherwise. I'd have bought the 3800X if the 3700X hadn't been released on day 1, AMD lost some money from me, others too.
