I would probably agree with your choice based on logic, but am still saddened so see no mention (as usual) for Oric.

The two computers (pre-PC) that I owned.

Amstrad CPC-6128 and an ORIC (French equivalent of the spectrum I think). The ORIC was brilliant. The CPC I just loved with the disc drive, never had any stupid issues with tapes (The CPC is in the loft, and I even had the monitor with the TV tuner converter, and a load of blank discs (Which were awesome.. so much better and more durable that the stupid PC floppy disks - I don't recall one EVER failing on me).

In that era, if I wanted a games machine is would have been the C64 though. Sadly, I never owned one. The best thing after that was the Amiga :-D

The reason I loved the Spectrum though is for me it was just more exciting:-

Interface 1 and Microdrives
Currah MicroSpeech
Silver bogroll printer
Interface 3
32K RAMPAC

so much more cool stuff ;)

I don't think you could really compare them, ZX Spectrum came out in several flavours and specs over the years, as did the others. I liked them all tbh, only owned a 48K Speccy if we're staying pre-amiga days though but the C64 and CPC464 had games I could play at my mates houses which I just couldn't get on the speccy and vice versa :)

A best? I'd say the 48K spectrum, but I'm biased. To me it and it's successors were simply more flexible, had more accessories that I could actually buy in my home town and had an insane number of games available for it, again in my home town.

Being a child with no access to HMV etc in my town did limit my experience though :)

C64! was playing with an old one when I was seven years old - loved the thing, got into fractal art & hexadecimal coding at a pretty young age!.

Also loved the games & the music on them - ahh... the good old days of computing!.

C64 -> Amiga -> 486 -> P60 -> P800 -> Q6600 -> i5-2500k is my gaming progression :cool:

I had a CPC464 with green screen - upgraded to colour a year after.

Charming machine but power-wise it was pretty feeble - no hardware sprites or hardware scrolling.

C64 the better machine - better hardware, far superior sound chip - Hubbard soundtracks = mazeballs.

Spectrum was pants.

You mean a TV broadcasting company is actually a home computer? :p

I'm nowhere near old enough, but the ZX Spectrum still seems the coolest of that bunch, even if it was ****. :)
