An all encompassing Steam FAQ thread

Quick question, im in the process of downloading Half Life 2 (first purchase) and i left it download, however a couple of times i came back to check on it and it says "SUSPENDED" meaning i have to pause then resume the download. Is this normal behaviour for steam? I dont want to have to watch my downloads like a hawk in future..

I've only seen this happen when waking my computer from sleep (as ps3udo mentioned), or when the internet dropped out. Usually it starts again though.
Any chance either of these may have happened?

It should just download in entirety provided Steam has constant internet access.

IME Steam is quite fickle when it comes to a stable internet connection if my friends list is anything to go by. Whenever my laptop loses wifi or wakes up from sleep the FL sometimes never refreshes so assumes Im still offline with no internet connection.

Generally its me having to restart Steam or waiting quite a while for Steam to realise a connection is there before I can show online on the FL. I wonder if such an issue extends to the inbuilt download client

P.S. Not sure how these stickies are meant to go regards discussion so please delete if this isnt helpful or adding mess...

ps3ud0

The computer definitely didnt go to sleep or anything, and the internet is wired in so the connection didnt drop out. It was strange because HL2 and HL2 Lost cost were both downloading (part of a pack it seems) and only one would be suspended wheras the other would download fine. If there was a problem surely both would have been suspended?

It seems odd, but it might be because HL2 and lost coast contain a large amount of common files. One would be downloading the files that both needed while the other waited. I can't say for sure that it's the cause, but it would be my suspicion, and I don't think you'll have problems in general if you tried the same with different games. :)

I've also updated the points on Steam Guard and Pricing with some more info, and added a new question regarding logging in on multiple machines that I saw someone mention.

Nice thread, how long has it been here? lol

I may have to turn steam guard off for now as the stupid thing keeps asking for steam verication codes even if the computer has already been used with it. I mean every time I need to type my password in (it's fine when autologging in) I have to check my email. :(

Anyone else keep getting the annoying "We see you're logging in to Steam from a new browser or a new computer. Or maybe it's just been a while..." rubbish from Steam? Any solution?

Depends if you're just here to spam it and never post it again. :p

I don't know for sure if the mods would have a problem, but I don't see why not. Probably best to email one of them and ask. :)

I want to get more active in the OCUK community, so I won't post it a few times and leave this site completely.

They may have a problem as they got their own STEAM group and maybe they will get annoyed.

Can you give me link to profile/email of a mod? As all the people seem to have the same color and I don't know who is who :P

You should add Gamesave manager to the FAQ for "How do I install Steam to one drive and move games to another?"

It makes moving things around and creating junctions so much easier!

You mean this bit that's already there? :p ;)

How do I install Steam to one drive and move games to another?

There are two popular ways of doing this. One is to use an application to set up links between directories in your Steam folder and other hard drives, and the other is to use mklinks to manually set up directory junctions.

There's plenty of easy to use applications available for this. Two that spring to mind are GameSaveManager and Steam Mover. Personally I use GameSaveManager because of all it's other handy features.
