And Lewis Hamilton wins his 8th Championship!

It's a sad state for the sport when comments are confirming this will be his 8th championship.

Hopefully he does a Rosberg at the end of the season but stays away unlike Alonso the cockroach.

I reckon most teams now will want a slightly subservient second driver. Two hard chargers with a rebellious streak won’t end well for any team, especially if there are other teams with similar performance.

It never has been good for teams. The problem for most teams is that they are purely playing for points and not the title. 2 hungry drivers who clash is better than 1 good driver and one wet blanket. Mercedes can get away with it because you could put a poodle in their cars and probably still have a good chance at winning the constructors, their number 2 driver isn't really a worry on the quality front.

Once Hamilton retires he won't come back either. Far too much to lose and nothing to gain really,

Sounds like he’ll seal this championship then retire. Who knows, maybe it won’t go his way and he’ll stick around. He’ll retire on a high, he’s seen Schumacher return that didn’t amount to much and the embarrassment of alonso returning. Hamilton has too much of a life outside F1 to come back.

This also raises the possibility of two seats being available at Mercedes next season. I’m sure one is as good as Russell’s, who would or could be in the second seat if Lewis decides to retire after his eighth title? Could they stick with Bottas again for some continuity?

Verstappen's contract runs out at the end of the year so assuming Hamilton does leave then I imagine Max will jump straight in, but frankly anyone who can afford to would be willing to buy out their contract even if they weren't free to leave.

I assume Russell will be one driver, and probably would have been for this season had Bottas not already signed before the Sakhir race, but I'm not sure they'll go with Russell as the lead or equal driver based on a one-off race on a unique track layout. Obviously they'll know how good he is on the sim, but that ability doesn't always transfer to the track.

I think they'll want someone proven though not necessarily a world champion. So if not Max then someone like Ricciardo or Vettel (neither are free, but everyone has their price).

Not wanting to go off topic for long, but what's embarrassing about Alonso return? Obviously how much speed he's lost only time will tell, but it's a bit premature calling it an embarrassment.

Fair enough if he comes back and wins a championship, but I wish some of these older guys would just let go, stop being back markers and give some younger blood a chance. All Schumacher did was degrade his stats.

I love an young up and comer myself, but it's rare for them to come into a full works team. Assuming Alonso didn't come back who would have got the seat? Probably Perez or Hulkenberg returning. None of Renault's junior drivers have shown enough to warrant jumping straight into the seat and having an underachieving Ocon and a reject like Albon is certainly not going to drive the team forward.

Alonso's not winning another championship (not with Renault anyway), but he wanted to return and Renault wanted him by the sounds of it. He was still considered a top driver when he left so if he's still 90% of that then he'll be better than most. If Ocon outperforms him then it's a mistake, but I with so little testing and an hour less running each weekend I suppose we might have to wait until 2022 to conclusively say that.

Renault’s and Alonso’s thinking is towards the new regulations and ‘the great reset’. Alonso has even said as such publicly. He’s not interested in results this season, he wants full focus on next years car.

Lol , love your Alonso analogy.

Yep an 8th is coming for sure , yawn . I feel he won’t go though at the end of it though as I don’t think he could stand not being in the limelight - tax dodgers have become so vain these days :D

Anyhow - sigh another year of Hamilton and his Bitch.

But in all seriousness bottom line is it’s such a shame for genuine F1 fans.

If people didn't like the sport being dominated by a single team they would be very unhappy most of the time. All the top drivers are good enough to get enough from the best car to win the constructors. Its almost entirely a question of "how much better is car A compared to car B". If its more than a few % then thats the car/team that will win the championship barring really bad luck or poor driving.

Prior to the last laps of Abu Dhabi I was hoping that we'd see a changing of the guard with the new regs, with new drivers and teams rising to the top. After Lewis getting Masi'd at Abu Dhabi I hope he wins this year and gets the record he deserves.
Indeed, I've never been Hamilton's biggest fan but I really hope he wins this year.
