Android more popular than iPhone in the UK ?

I thought Android had taken over about 4 years a go. I also wouldn't lose a wink of sleep if iOS vanished. Just saying.

I would I've got 100s of euro invested in apps.

Had a few android tablets but their store is just too clunky when you look for an official app you are given 100s with the same name clearly there is little to none quality control made by google for their store.

Also its guesswork to find out if apps are going to work which google has realised since it offers refunds....

My son has android on his phone dunno which version though (stupid naming convention gripe)

I was trying to explain to someone the other day why Android apps will vary in performance from phone to phone in contrast to Apple apps but they just didn't understand. Their viewpoint was just: Android is bad, end of.

Funny how this is also the reason why it's so good :D. Don't need a phone to play top-end phone games but what an awesome OS? Buy a £60 Android. Want a phone to play top end phone games? Buy a £500 Android.

Though to be fair to Apple, their "cheap" edition really doesn't break the bank at all :p.

It's a shame really because Android is such an awful OS to develop for, emulator so slow it's useless, 500 different versions of the OS still being used, very outdated programming methodologies, terrible development tools like the Eclipse plugin, and although not Google's fault, about 10 million screen sizes, resolutions and DPI's to cater for.

On sales Its outnumbered ios for ages and by a massive amount.
What's more interesting is how fast wp8 is catching up with ios.

IPhones EU market share is pretty darn low.

I can't even see those stats being right as android has been out selling ios for years.
Those stats dont really tell much other than ios use to have a large marketshare. Sale stats are more useful to see trends.
Uk
70.1% android
16% ios
12% wp8

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/384484/windows-phone-hits-double-digit-share-in-uk

Its even better in Italy,
Ios 10%
Wp8 16%

WP8 should quite rightly take more market share as time goes on. It is a very good operating system and one which I much prefer over Android.

Emulator is pretty shocking isnt it :( you can install the haxm extras for certain intel chips which makes it almost as fast as a real phone. Some limitations.

Have you tried genymotion? My favourite second only to running on physical devices.

Is it outdated? android was the first bit of programming I learnt. My skills don't extend much further than mobile/server backends.

Can you explain what you mean by that? I've never written anything for a Android.

Tight coupling is one of the major pains in programming for Android in my experience, modern architectures like MVC require loose coupling, which tbh is desirable in any application really.

Developing for iOS is a dream in comparison.

Do you not find eclipses log cat better than xcode log?(I'm not sure if its my ignorance, a limitation in the languages or the development tools) When it comes to debugging anyway.

Honestly that's the least of my issues considering how buggy eclipse is. :p

Having to constantly clean my project because I changed an xml file which is now causing some error message saying one thing can't be cast to another, or getting an exception that the package I'm developing isn't installed when I try to upload my program to the phone.

Arrgh I thought that was just my install of eclipse haha :D I always put it down to inexperience.

I have noticed my R.java goes walkies way too much :( pain in the backside to fix.

With RIM on the decline large corporations are starting to move to wp8 devices as they are quite easy to integrate into existing infrastructures

If by easy to integrate you mean equally as easy as iOS / Android if it's been made by a competent OEM then yes.

Does the Windows Phone app market have a concept of a volume license yet?

I wouldn't go as far as to say ios has even remote integration with windows. The predominant corporate os.

Android also on the whole are pretty poorly integrated.

Ios and mac are beautiful together (well from my virtual machine experience). It only has iTunes to integrate with in windows which is terrible considering how old the program is.

I expect windows 8 and the phone version (almost identical aren't they?) to gel just as well as the ios with mac.

Why does a mobile phone need to integrate with a desktop OS

Use SkyDrive for some reason? Use the SkyDrive iOS app. Same for the Pro version. Use Exchange at work? ActiveSync on iOS.

iOS is incredibly compatible with existing infrastructures, hence why it's very popular.
