Android more popular than iPhone in the UK ?

It's a shame to see HTC in such a way; the One is a really nice device - with my personal complaints being Android :p (Haters, hate, etc..)

But I'm not surprised that Android could be more popular when they charge horrific amounts for iPhone contracts. Still doesn't stop me from seeing pretty much everyone with an iPhone, or me waiting to jump at a larger iPhone.

@Dimple: I did! Currently waiting to go back. :p

@Caged: A physical CD lets you rip it how you want with ALAC, FLAC, etc. I don't buy physical copies that often though.

I don't really trust that graph. Series 40 cannot have increased its market share since it isn't a smartphone os and I didn't think nokia was producing phones again yet

I believe the cheap Nokia Asha series runs a version of S40 which can have internet access and a limited selection of apps.

No, no! That statement is wrong... Android isn't stolen because Android users are computer geeks and weigh 320lb (got the numbers mixed up) and barely leave the house... ;)

Out of interest how does Google make money with Android. As they make billions in revenue a year I assume there must be some profit in it or they wouldn't bother.

The whole point of Android is to get people to use Google to do their searching which drives ad revenue. The same way the purpose of Gmail is to be able to keyword match emails to deliver better targeted adverts.

Google make more from iOS than they do from Android.

Edit: To expand on that, it's due to the fact that although there are far more Android devices in the wild, they don't actually get used as much as iOS devices do online.

I think it's 100% to do with people going into a phone shop (or on the Internet), seeing the massive price it costs to get a hi-end iOS or Android phone and then choose a £10/month contract with a cheap Android (or cheap Android with PAYG).

Sadly I think this is true with quite a few people. They buy a cheap android phone, decide based on that phone that android is rubbish, then get an iphone. If only they had just got a good Android phone, they'd like Android.

There aren't any 'good' Android phones though as none of them seem to come close to outselling a single iPhone model.

Android exists because most phone manufacturers are too lazy or too incompetent to create their own software - look at smart phones pre iPhone, all had awful confusing OS not to mention the mess that Samsung infects its phones with. Android ripped off iOS and then whores it out for free so why wouldn't all the landfill manufacturers use it?

As a free OS its ok but if I'm spending £500 on a phone I want a premium OS.

There are some rather decent Android phones, an HTC One for example. But, it takes time messing about to get it to do things in a similar way to an iPhone can out of the box. No matter how powerful you make the phone, or how long you 'tinker', I still have to mess about to change a song, rather than press a little button twice on my headphones.

Things like that make the average person prefer their iPhone.

The Note series of phones was, and still is, fantastic and in my opinion is streets ahead of the iphone.

The benchmark of something being "good" doesn't necessarily mean outselling the competition. There are plenty of excellent Android handsets, and millions of people seem to agree otherwise they wouldn't be paying iPhone-equivalent money for them.

Lets be honest, 90% of the consumer market in mobile phones dont REALLY know what's running on it, they'll just know it has Web, Facebook and emails "n stuff" they can do on it. THey will know brands, but thats about it.

Mum picked up a cheap Android tablet over christmas was about £50, I've had a play around with it and its slow. but works fine for web browsing, ordering from amazon and and a few games.(perfect for mummy)

It's running android.. So I suppose an OS that can literally be put on any type of device, from super cheap to expensive, well it is going to lead the way.

Agreed, My note 2 is without a doubt the best device I've ever owned. And everytime the OS updates, I find something new to enjoy.
