~*Anime*~ fans rejoice : Japan to produce real Gundam

I would buy one.

To cruise the neighbourhood and pick up girls.

Literally pick up girls.

:D

I desperately want to link to the anime thread in the Music, Box Office, TV and Books subforum but given that the thread was started by a commissario this is probably a terrible idea. Needless to say it is both alarming and hilarious.

OTAKU!

This has made me think that all wars should be fought by people in massive robots with giant samurai swords. This would make the world much cooler IMO.

Art or not, they are still predominantly the domain of children and teenagers

In this country yes, but by that definition so are live action film and CGI movies as most television is watched by children and teenagers.

and also to adults who by and large seem to have some rather strange affectations.....

My point, its more of a cultural thing than an age thing, here adults watching animated films seems silly.

In any case, they are still Cartoons as a cartoon is defined as being illustrated visual art.

In some places maybe, but by an large cartoons are drawn to be comical/caricature whereas animated movies are drawn to be realistic. Its like comparing Dennis the menace to the Mona Lisa, Or Rodger Rabbit to Avatar.

But nvm as this is going seriously OT.

My point is that most genres cater for all age groups to one degree or another, however it is predominantly the younger age groups that consume it....and that all creative mediums can be considered art...by that doesn't validate it any more or less than any other medium or target audience.

I wouldn't say that adults watching animation is silly at all.....much depends on the genre or nature of the animation being watched and the content rather than the generalisation of a broad range of genres.

No.....Caricature, Comics, Animé, Manga, Hentai, Graphic Novels, Disney and so on are all Cartoons.......the term, like Animé is largely generic.....whether it is aimed at children or adults is not defined by the medium, but by the content.

And just to ask, are you seriously saying that Urotsukidōji was intended to portray realism?

I'm not into the whole anime culture thing, but I don't see anything wrong with watching something like Akira if it pops up on Film4. It's as valid a medium as CGI IMO and if it entertains and tells the story well, why should an adult not watch it?

Thinking this stuff is "wrong" or "immature" to watch, merely because there's a bunch of obsessive fans with some strange habits is stupid in all honesty. I certainly don't bat an eyelid at anyone watching Pixar films if they want to.

Watch Monster, Akira, Ghost In The Shell... they are a few amongst many animes which are best suited to adults. People are far too ignorant about these things.

Yet my 13 year old watched Akira and Ghost in the Shell.....I watched them as a teenager....

Which is the point, like most forms of animation, it is predominantly children and young adults that watch and enjoy them. Why do people get all defensive of Japanese cartoons....they are what they are, people either enjoy them or they don't..age is largely irrelevant except when we consider how most people first experience the medium...which by and large is when they are younger, the genre is fuelled by the younger generation and the majority of it is aimed at that teenager/young adult age group.

It is a little like comic books, most people are introduced in childhood, some people grow out of it and find other interests, others retain their interest and continue reading comics into adulthood (I enjoy comic books and some Manga for example)...there is nothing wrong with that, but the vehement defence of it as an adult art-form seems to me to be people trying to justify their own doubts about watching it rather than any specific criticism of it.

Unless it is Hentai etc and that is simply weird.
