Anonymous hacks FBI laptop and finds personal data from millions of Apple devices

Is there a quick way to check with decrypting the file etc etc?

Trust ur GUID (or partial) and I'll check.

Looking at the file it's just IDs and device names... you won't know how much personal info is there unless they released the whole file uncleansed.

Do people think before they speak or has the internet now entirely removed that capability in people.

Apple and other companies cannot withhold date if they get a request, backed by law from the US government. The only way they can resist is if they don't have the data. Once you get to a certain size, the US government will expect you to store relevant data on your customers.

Companies only choose how readily available this data is to the government. The only people you have to blame for this are the government of the US. Even then it is a tenuous one as they have legitimate reason for holding certain data and it was obtained via a security vulnerability in 3rd party software.

Pretty sure they'll argue the case now though :p given the fact the Government led to the breach.

I think many other companies will want assurances from the Government due to these findings.

I knew all this years ago, but apparently I was just a "conspiracy nut" and there was "no way Apple would breach it's users' privacy like that."

This is why I don't own a smartphone, or anything made by Apple. I won't contribute towards a dark future.

...and leaks them.

It's good to know Apple keeps our data in safe hands. :)

Pretty shady from Apple.

Reading the quasi-pretentious bullcrap in that Anonymous 'statement' is hilarious, though. They really come across like a bunch of shut-ins that think of themselves as genius-savants, or something. Misusing philosophical terms and trying to give their actions some deeper meaning that doesn't exist. The long diatribe about the entertainment industry was a nice little recursion to every single mass-paperback of the 1990's. Well done. If teenagers look up to these people... God help them.

It's amusing seeing the digs at Apple here and elsewhere, I'm far from an Apple fanboy but the US government will have 'asked' (read: demanded) for this data and essentially Apple would've had no choice.

As for the FBI seemingly having an unsecure laptop, that also contained this information, just lol really :p

Would be interesting to see just how much personal information is actually there, they say it was far from complete so could just be the very basics...

...I'm confused. Why are apple getting the abuse?

FBI lost information, provided by apple.

No one here knows what circumstances those details were acquired under, but considering its a law enforcement agency, its a good chance they were legal channels right?

Naughty FBI. Apple arent at fault here!

it's 12 million people, no way in hell was that from a court order.

What is to say Google/Microsoft don't already do it. I bet they do. :p

Indeed, I don't own devices made by them either.

Are you a Linux user? Technology is probably an excuse for massive data gathering exercise. An increase in broadband speeds means faster access for users, which means more data could be gathered.

Put that in your conspiracy pipe and smoke it!

Supervisor Special Agent Christopher K. Stangl from FBI Regional Cyber Action Team and New York FBI Office Evidence Response Team

Anyone else considered the possibility that these details could have been evidence that the FBI had seized from some actual criminals or is our immediate reaction to don the tinfoil hats?

Why not? What's going to happen if you have a smart phone?

You're obviously using something to connect to the Internet with, all those details are recorded somewhere.

I'm sure you have a phone of some sort, it will be submitting information that is recorded too.
