Another 'is this bike any good?' thread

I did!
It was only twenty minutes before sunset by the time I got home so I went out for a quick ride. I didn't remember to start Strava until I was at the green dot on the map so the first part isn't recorded. I did a couple of loops around and then back so wasn't out for long.

Hopefully I'll get home a bit earlier tomorrow and will go a little further. I was going to pick up a Garmin 25 using part of the excess cash I had on the voucher but they won't allow any GPS gear on C2W so I ended up with a pair of gloves and a spare inner tube as well.

The guy who served me yesterday was dreadful. Really not very interested in anything, totally different to the chap who I saw the first time. I asked if he could put it down as something else and from the look on his face, you'd think I'd have asked him to perform an unnatural act on a dung beetle.

That one looks interesting but out of stock. How does it measure distance?

Looks like you had a bad salesman :(

There is a magnet and a reader on the wheel that sends info back to the computer, pretty accurate.

You can have mine for the price of postage if you want, its only seen 60 miles use.

Just a tip, bike thives have been known to use strava to find out where people live. Think you can set up a private zone around your neighbourhood.

Maybe for a £4k DI2 carbon rig but I wouldn't worry for a normal bike.

Just looking at the estimated power, have you got it set as a mountain bike on Strava by any chance? If you have it will assume all rides are off road.

Thanks, I'll contact you :)

Have done, ta.

Nope, I've set it as a Cross Bike which is what I understand is the correct type to use for a hybrid.

That option wasn't even there when I last added a bike!

It doesn't make much difference, it simply uses that as an indication of terrain so if you select anything other than road it will over state estimated power when riding on tarmac. A complete non issue as long as you don't need to use the calorie data.

And here it is....

Rode a bit further this time, big loop around the block, nearly four miles. There's quite a long gradual hill towards the end and although I was right down in the gears, I didn't stop. It so happens that it's already a segment on Strava with a record of 0:59. It took me 2:04.

Don't panic, I won't be posting every ride ;)

Did you buy tyres to upgrade over those heavy OEMs? For road use, a set of 38mm Vittoria Voyager Hypers would be a good deal for £26 from PlanetX, perhaps add a Chunkey Monkey and Smorgasbord combo for off-road for another £26 and then get free postage.

Do check out clearance for those off-road, they are 2.3-2.4" wide, pretty sure 38mm are an easy fit but not sure on those wider ones.

The tyres in the pic look like continentals - maybe he got an upgrade as they dont look likr the kenda here: http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/hybrid-bikes/voodoo-marasa-hybrid-bike

Looks like the last bike I bought from Halfords; No rear wheel reflector, no bar ends. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that you took the rear reflector off yourself :p

The rear reflector was taken off in the shop as we couldn't get the saddle low enough with the tool bag because I've only got little legs.

However I've already been in contact with Halfords regarding the fact that the wheels aren't the same! Should I expect bar ends? I really don't know!

The front wheel is wrong.. the back one looks like in the advert.

The front brake disk is different too, but that stands to reason if theyve put the wrong front wheel on.

Yes I'd insist on bar ends, there bar ends on the picture on the website.

Spoke to them, they're replacing the whole bike, all the accessories, everything. It'll be ready for me on Tuesday (because I'm away from the area on Friday and Monday is Bank Holiday).

Nice one Feek. The only thing you gained on by the look of things was bagging some better tyres but that is neither here or there really.

Yeah you should have bar end caps and legally speaking a bell, front and rear reflectors, pedal reflectors and IIRC wheel reflectors.

My MTB came from Halfords with the front reflector and bell missing, one bar end cap missing, scratches in the frame down to the metal and two of the hydraulic brake hose clips missing and replaced with cable ties. None of it really mattered but that isn't the point. If I hadn't got a cracking deal on it and it wasn't the only one in my size for miles (I already had to drive over 30 miles for this one) then I'd have told them to keep it.

The tyres look better than the standard ones if they are continental, I'd pressure (lol) them to give you them in return for doing a half assed job on the build and messing you about....besides they have been used by you now so don't really have any resale value to halfords.
