Another Virgin Media Rant!!!!

basically

1) I refuse to pay BT £150 to connect my telephone.
2) I don't have a TV aerial so even with a working telephone I can't have freeview.

so as bad as they are, they are still the best alternative.

150 quid really!!! That can't be for a simple reconnection. I've been reconnected 3 times with BT and they've never charged. Do they need to install a new line? I Know BT can be quite expensive for some stuff. They wanted £170 to move the main socket from my hallway to the front room.

I kid you not mate. I wouldn't mind but the BT representative who I spoke to when we moved in told me we didn't have a BT line to our property, funny as there is a BT box next to my front door! She insisted that a connection fee would be £150 but if its easier we could do it in installments !! Then I signed up with Telewest, who became Virgin Media 2 weeks later, then it all went downhill....

I haven't had many problems with it to be fair. Most of the time it's been my router that has taken a plunge and tried to kill off the connection (Netgear! - had 2, both died in under 3 months ). Video can be a bit slow sometimes though.

Could it be HER connection? :/

Nope I am positive of that. She or her brother rather downloads large files reguarly over 2mb per second  they have a private dedicated line with only a handful of people using it. It makes me sick when they click a 700mb torrent only to have it complete and seeding within a matter of a minute or so.

MAJOR RANT TIME!

Yesterday I got one of my mates to come to my house between 8am - 12 so a technician could come out and fix a new set top box. The old one worked fine up until a few days ago when all of a sudden it stopped sending out a net signal. I reset it but the power would not turn back on, either by remote or button on the box.

Anyway the box was fitted when i got home yesterday and the internet light showed up on the front, the tv now works fine, excellent i though. I tried using internet and it wouldnt find any page. I rang my mate and he said the guy said it should all work fine and it will send the signal to my computer and i would need to fill in my details again to activate it.

I then unplugged the router and plugged the cable from the settop box directly into my pc. Still no reg page or anything came up.

I rang broadband department, an 0906 number that costs 25p a min from virgin phones and 10p to connect. I spoke to an asian woman who i could hardly understand for 20minutes going through some stages like resetting the box and telling her the ip address, she said it wasnt refreshing the signal correctly and i would need someone to come out and fit a cable modem, she also said my call would be refunded because it wasnt my fault. She then said to hold the line and she would transfer me to sales. I waited 2 minutes and was then cut off! great i though.

I rang sales but it was closed after 8pm. I rang sales this morning and spoke to a guy for 10minutes or so. He said theres apparently a problem with the new boxes in that they are not compatible like the old ones and the guy shouldnt have fitted the new box, fantastic. Another technicial needed to come out and fit a cable modem, but one wasnt available until next friday from 12 - 6pm. Thats another week and a half without the net. I asked if I would be refunded for not having the net for 2 weeks and he said he can see my account has been credited £4.90.

The phone calls to indian or wherever probably cost me about £10 and no net for 2 weeks is more aswell. (£23.50/month for tv and broadband) Plus the fact i have numerous accounts on the net i am paying monthly for like rapidshare, fileplanet and also things to sort out like paypal etc. I will have to take time off work or get someone to come in the house next friday to let the technician in too.

Cant wait till i close my virgin media account, go travelling and come back to sky or some other broadband provider.

Absolute nobbers

i phone virgin media and tell them to send him back and they tell me thats not possible....bearing in mind im calling a 0906 number from my mobile

You should be able to arrange a replacement modem via customer services, that's not a premium rate number. Depending on what kit you have you may not need an engineers visit to install it either.

Another tip for tech support is the virginmedia.support.broadband.cable newsgroup. That's one of the few remaining ways to get through to knowledgeable techs, not an Indian call centre where everyone reads from scripts. They can certainly arrange replacement modems, engineer visits etc.

conclusion, wifes fault, if she was expecting VM to call by she could have changed the baby downstairs if you dont hear the door upstairs.

also! wireless doorbells, where you carry the bell with you would work wonders

vm do get bad press, but rants like this make it much worse!

Good, after they replaced my set top box with one that doesnt work i had to ring india for neally 30minutes to find out it wouldnt work. I was told to keep on the line and would be transferred to sales, where i was cut off after waiting another 2 minutes!

Then i rang the next day and spoke to sales who told me they shouldnt have fitted the new type of set top box and a technician would be coming out a week and a half later to install a cable modem, only giving me one available slot!

are right, sorry. I thought you were referring to my post above and implying they dont deserve bad press

np, im not saying that the bad press VM get is not justified, but having a rant about the engineer moving onto his next call is laughable.

I work for a large computer company and occassionally have to do visits to home users, even after making appt times with them you find they are not home, we quiet happily send them an invoice for £50 for a wasted visit, whether they were changing the baby's nappy or not!!!!!

Yeh, i though it a bit stupid the orgional poster had a moan about them not moving on when no one answered the door. Its like if the postman comes and your in bed or in the shower or something, its hardly their fault.

It would be nice if they could give you a time though, instead of just saying 8am-12 or 12-6pm. That way i could be in during the morning or leave from work early
