what's so 'special' about the ants they send in the post then, o and vent you're a legend

The ants I used (Lasius Niger - the normal black garden ants) work absolutely great and I did have a huge network of tunnels which they dug. I did use a sand/soil mix so perhaps the ants havent come across a bright blue jelly before.

Ah man i want an ant farm, i used to love my ant farm when i was younger, i just used garden ants, and im sure you need more than 8

my little sister has one of the iwantoneofthose antfarms and she bought the ants that you can get from the site.
They just sat around for a long while doing nothing then they started digging. They dug a nice long tunnel about 4cm down and all the way across the thing but havent done anything else since.
They eat the blue stuff I think and they mostly do it at night, I think if you put them in a cupboard or somewhere dark for a while they might feel a little better.

oh cool, i'll order some ants when i'm back out of hospital then
i let this batch of wrong ants go (much to my girlfriends delight
)
would be cool to put a divider in, then get red ants on one side and black on the other, then when they're least expecting it (after a week or so of digging) removed the divider and see who has the best base!

Or even better, wait until they dig into each others territory and watch them battle it out.
