Any advice on what Portable Air Conditioning unit to buy (UK) ?

Right, theres condensation that only happens on my lounge windows, I assumed because all my basil plants are there.

Will check to make sure its only on the surface next time it happens.

And crap, I just checked and the condensation is between the panes.

Hopefully new build warranty will cover it.

School system failed us again.

Bit short sighted as portable AC units are also a tenth of the cost of a basic proper installation and more than suitable for the 10 days of blistering heat we get. Point 1 - yes, point 2 - no, at least not the ones I know, point 3 - do you not have windows?, Point 4 - quality dependant surely but extended warranties are inexpensive.

Do you not have windows?

everyone has windows - but to get proper performance of the unit, the tubing needs to be sealed against the window - my windows open in/out at 45 degree angle, makes it impossible to get a seal storm the tubing so hot air from outside just comes back into the room.

1/10th the cost? Not where I live anyway, I can get a 7kW proper AC unit installed by a professional for 1.6k pounds and a 4kW portable AC costs me 500 pounds to buy

I've got the £300 one from Screwfix, it's alright and does the job but it's bloody loud. I struggle to sleep with it one however I normally tend to use it to cool the room down before I go to bed and it does make a big difference. I then put it back on around 4am when I go and let the puppy out and turn it off when I go back to bed.

They are indeed loud. Run ours overnight no issues though, noise you get used to :)

This is the thread I needed but didn't know it until I saw it!

I heard that in some cases you can end up making your house warmer if it's not set up correctly?

OP HERE.

So after 1 day of using it, hanging it slightly of a casement style window (opens 45° angle from top to bottom). I can honestly say that it is amazing and I wish I bought one sooner! - Yes, it is noisy but it's a constant noise of the same thing, which i'm very used to and is fine for me.

I'm even thinking of buying a second one for my bedroom, however I think buying 2 units for one spout of hot weather might be overkill... I didn't buy one last year, but did this year. Maybe next year i'll get a second higher-end one and put my existing one into the bedroom.

Conclusion: If you have £300-400 spare, then definitely buy one. However, I am working from home, which means it is the hottest usually around 11-4pm near me. Therefore, you might not get as much benefit if you aren't working from home.

As an alternative for the bedroom you could look into a ceiling fan instead. Moving air makes a MASSIVE difference to sleep quality when its this warm.

Yep, I had a lovely cold bedroom last night, and slept great. I had it on a timer for a couple of hours and when I woke up around 2am and it was getting warm again I chucked it on for another hour on the timer and it was brilliant. Slightly annoying to roll on the carpet in this place, but I'm moving next week so that won't be a problem long term.

So after a week with two new 12000 BTU Units (Goodhome Takoma from Screwfix and Rhino AC12000 from FFX) for ~£300 each, my thoughts, the idea was to try a couple of models and keep the one we liked the most in our bedroom and give the other to my son (My daughter already has our old 12000 BTU Unit that is going well after 18 years)

A. The Goodhome is excessively large, it's still OK, but it's needlessly larger than it needs to be. The Rhino is much smaller yet performs the same and is a bit quieter in terms of fan noise.
B. Both units compressors seem to be as noisy as each other, both can have a slight warble compared to our old 12000 BTU Unit, I suspect it's due to the way the compressor is driven as they are now all A rated.
C. The Goodhome has all the controls on the flat top surface, so not visible from the bed, the Rhino's controls/display are on the front so visible when laying in bed.
D. The Rhino has mechanised vent louvres that close when switched off and can be adjusted from the remote, or can be set to 'swing', it seems the perfect height to project cool air across the bed if you so desire!
E. The goodhome is a 4 in 1 so can heat as well, but doubt I'd ever use that feature.

The Rhino is about 3/4 the depth of the Goodhome, and just looks a lot slimmer:

If I bought another one, I'd get the Rhino, overall it's smaller footprint, front controls and slightly quieter fan with seemingly identical performance would edge it, but if all I had was the Goodhome, I'd not be complaining!

We just have the tube sticking out of a normal side opening window and the curtains do a good enough job of creating a barrier to stop too much hot air coming back in, this is enough to get the room down to 19 degrees (about 1 degree every 5 mins in our bedroom) when it's 29 degrees outside.

I just rang to get a quote for installation costs- £1379 if the external unit is over 3 metres high, £1175 if not. This excludes the price of the unit.
Check eBay, there are sellers on there offering installed basic Mitsubishi split systems for less than this inclusive. Up to 10m pipe runs and some other caveats.

Just reviving this one as I'm looking at buying a portable AC unit with heating function. Which units are currently recommended?

My shortlist so far:

Inventor Magic 12000BTU Portable 5-1 Air Conditioner, Heater, Dehumidifier, Cooling Fan, Digital Display & Remote Control, 3 fan speeds and 24 Hour Timer (WEE/MM0449AA) https://amzn.eu/d/bYHULrG

I think I'm going to buy a portable air conditioner as a stop gap for my 10ft by 13ft bedroom. I'm planning to move in a couple of years so a permanent solution can wait untill then.

Do you think the De'Longhi Pinguino PACEX120 is overkill for my bedroom? It says it has an ‎air purification filter which might help with allegrises that hit me in the spring or is this bascially snake oil?
