Any advice on what Portable Air Conditioning unit to buy (UK) ?

Seems to although early in the year yet. We have it (and a previous not as powerful air con) on the landing so the cool air sinks downstairs if we use it during the day and then we point it at the door for a bedroom in the evening to cool them down.
you're always going to have the noise of the fan/air but we don't find it too intrusive as it's a fairly consistent noise rather than sharp peaks and troughs.

I changed the link to the manufacturer, think they have more detail

Bought a black and decker portable 12000 BTU air conditioner in July last year to replace a 10yr old one that was on the way out as it couldn't cool anymore, it's used quite a lot through the entire year and so far it's been great. Cools my bedroom down very quickly in the summer even when gaming, I have the exhaust pipe drilled through the wall as it stays where it is permanently so the exhaust air goes straight outside without using windows.

Not the quietest machine but I have no issues sleeping about 8ft away from it.

Can you recommend a decent split air con unit for £700 installed?
I put a question mark. I didn't join this forum to prove how smart I am; I joined it to learn something :)

I paid like £200 for my portable AC; so unclear what people are getting for nigh on triple; and how much better/more expensive a proper unit would be?

Ah right same here. I don't know the answer to your question as I've mainly been looking at portable units.

Surely once you boys are getting into the 500-600-700 mark, a split A/C unit on the outside wall is a better idea?
Probably, although with this I can move it to wherever we need in in the house and I don't have to have a A/C unit bolted to the outside of the house. Granted you can have a central A/C with feeds to multi room but that's getting a bit more expensive.
We did have a $200 unit before which was fine to be fair, this one just stepped up from 9000BTU to 12000 BTU and seemed well reviewed. Probably the lazy/easy option to be honest but seems to work well enough for us.

Not a massive difference really. You’re certainly not getting 2-3x the performance or features. All you’ll find in more expensive units is generally better made, nicer looking. Some extra features like more fan speeds, slightly quieter, slightly more efficient. But I don’t really see any need to spend a fortune. As long as the output is specced high enough for the room it’ll be ok.

All portable aircon units are inherently inefficient in the way that they work, unless you can find a unit with two hoses, that way it’s not extracting hot air out the hose and effectively sucking hot air into the room to replace that extracted air. So at the same BTU they should all be fairly similar in terms of cooling performance.
