Any nightshift workers?

i work 17:30 to 3:30am, its fantastic, i did do 4 months of 6am to 2pm but told boss i wanted back on night or was walking. i dont understand ppl that want to get up at 4am for work.

Been on nights now for 8 years, its the only shift for me, less boss's on your back and more money.

If nights work for you, it can be quite good.

I hated it as detailed above, but the one thing I liked was driving back home in the early hours through the streets of London with no traffic and very few people. Almost as if the city and streets were yours for a little while.

Coming up to my 29th year of working 3 shift pattern.

For the first 10 years they were all 8 hour shifts, 7 earlies, 2 off, 7 nights, 2 off then 7 lates, 2 off.

Then we changed to 3 earlies, 2 off, 4 nights, 3 off, 3 lates, 2 off, 4 earlies, 2 off, 3 nights, 3 off, 4 lates, 2 off!

The nights are 9 hours, the lates are 10 hours and the earlies are a combination of 10 or 8 hours.

Been doing them so long now its just a routine, I sleep fine.

You soon get used to shifts.

The thing I find is that weeks and months seem to fly by as a result of doing shifts. Anyone else find this?

Yeah I got this, I put it down to the lack of a weekday-weekend structure. I'd have to actively check what day of the week it was when I was on shift, don't have to now.

It's what I put it down to as well, especially if you're on a rolling shift pattern like I am.

I found this certainly when doing permanent nightshifts, probably because you end up doing nothing during the 'week' but working! Work, eat, sleep, repeat.

Railway worker?

:) Fat Controller. Actually not so fat these days but that is something else you need to watch on nights, especially when energy ebbs away at 0300/0400. Don't hit the chocolate bars - I went through a phase when I was eating a Cadburys Boost bar most nights, horrible sickly stuff, cholesterol in a wrapper. Now I try and stick with fruit plus a decent sandwich and a yoghurt which is much healthier.

the one thing iv noticed more in work is how often the day staff's seem to ignore anything you suggest or report to them. so far in the last month iv reported the night keys have one which is cracked and needs replacing before it snaps, happened a couple of times before no biggy, well one of the day staff warned me this evening as i came in to watch out the keys cracked and needs replacing lol. well i never :O

I work 5pm - 2am on shift pattern for the past 15 months. Can do 5 days one week, 4 the next. It's a set shift pattern. I love doing it. I'll get home for 10 past 2, asleep by 3am and up for 11:30 or 12. Gives me plenty of time to do whatever I want in the day.

Thursday - 7pm to 4am
Friday - 7pm to 5am
Saturday - 7pm to 4am
Fortnightly an extra shift from 7pm to 4am (can be from Monday to Wednesday)
Monthly an extra shift from 11am to 6pm (usually the first Tuesday of the Month to do stock take)

In a LOUD night club, at least I can drink while I'm working :)

Basically in slowly killing myself and getting deaf.

I cannot complain, my parents used to tell me that when I was a baby I used to stay awake all night and sleep all day, so I'm doing all the same again :)
Also I hate mornings... don't ask me why, but for me the life begins after Midday :)

Just finished my night shift, 15:00 > 06:00, 9 hours off and I'll be back in @ 15:00.

Still enjoy it though!

How do stobarts get away with them hours.

They get away with nothing, that 9 hour rest period is at my discretion not their dictation.
If I'd wanted longer off, I could have said no but I'd rather start at 15:00 so, in the event of another 15hour shift I'll still be heading home by 6am on empty roads, say I'd started at 5pm instead,15hours later I'd be crawling home through morning rush traffic, half asleep, **** that!

The EU drivers hours regulations allow me to do three 15hour shifts with 9 hours rest on the trot, not safe imo but entirely legal in the eyes of the authority's! Absurd but there you go.

An hgv driver normally is required 11 hours rest in any 24hour working period but he can reduce that to 9hours upto three times in a given week.

In fairness to Stobart, they don't and wouldn't insist on what rest I take nor do they apply any pressure to do so, it's the drivers choice if he reduces his rest period or not.
In the past, I've worked for some hauliers who don't appreciate this and try to make drivers reduce against their will, I'm not afraid to say no!

Many people don't appreciate that whilst hgv drivers are indeed strictly regulated, the hours we can legally work are long and the down time relatively short.

As an example, 90 hour driving limit over a fortnight (just driving nothing else included in that like breaks, waiting time and other work) most people don't work 45hour weeks!

I have signed an opt out from the night workers directive, quite legally, it's a necessity of the nature of my job alas.

When I posted this morning, I was home and out with my two dogs in the garden, I then had my tea (end of my day if you will) and then went to bed, I was up again @14:00 and in work for 15:00, I'm now sat waiting at my delivery in St Albans.....

I used to do night shift. One advantage is that you can prowl the streets through the day after work and go to shops etc with no ques or traffic.
