Any opinions on o2 broadband?

Crikey, that's some cheap internetz! Although I'm on the access package at my home, I'm going to be installing broadband at my new business premesis. Is there anything to stop me using 'home' broadband for this? I can't see a reason why I'd need anything more than what I've been used to at home - there'll only be 2 computers in the building and only me working there initially! Also, since I signed up, 2 options have become 4 on the o2 site. I can get o2 LLU at the new address, but the website suggests a max of 8Mb. The unit next door struggles to get half this, but their phonelines are a complete bodge. Any reason for me to get anything other than the cheapest package?

Quoting myself from a few pages back! Any thoughts on this? Need to get the order in next week.

I ordered the Premier package today, they estimate I will get up to 10mb. BT say my line lengh is 2.5Km. It should be up and running by next Wednesday.

I live 1km away and I get 10-14 mbps, so I'd say around 7-10 mbps. Depends what your SNR is though.

SNR is the ratio of signal to noise, obviously signal strength needs to be higher than any background noise and SNR measures the ratio between the two, AFAIK it's more a stat for fault diagnosis. Attenuation and SNR Margin what most people will point to when estimating speeds, I guess Locke is confusing SNR with those.

log into your router and get these stats from it, this will give U these figures..

use this link to enable you to log into to your router if your unable to get in.
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php

e.g. connection down 2258 kbs connection down 288 kbs
attentuation down 22db connection up 16 db
Noise margin down 31db noise margin down 22db

on the above settings I should get 19mb but sadly I have alli in my line so I get 16mb.

Now go to the above link & add in your details that you have aquired from your router, the calculator will give you a very good estimate of what you may achieve.

kev!

Got my Line activated last night, 1 Day early. The engineer was in the exchange and decided to connect my line while he was there.

I was on 23meg down and 1.5 up, but they have since changed the connection to annex M to give me the full 2.5 up.

DSL Type: G.992.5 Annex M US 56
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 2,559 / 22,520
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 9.57 / 46.52
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 13.0 / 18.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 5.5 / 10.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 4.0 / 5.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 11 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 1 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 4 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 1 / 961
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 1 / 6
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 33 / 6

So far so good.

Are the HEC & FEC errors anything to worry about ?

i have also been getting terrible speeds all weekend (actually it seems to have been like this for at least a week now), like seriously less than 1mb download on a 8mb line. its been fine early in the morning... have o2 starting capping speeds at peak times? or is there any recent problems i should know about?! this is getting really annoying as i swtich to o2 to get away from these kinds of problems

I think it's caused by the influx of new customers caused by the Quidco £70 deal, 3 month free broadband, friends and family discount, etc.

They are currently undergoing quite a substantial upgrade program to attempt to ease congestion in the worst hit areas. Or so I have heard anyway.

Plus, see my thread about o2 being slow recently ( EDIT, just noticed you have posted in that :) ).

There was an outage causing huge hassles in the NW a day or so ago, I believe some cables were accidentally cut through somewhere.

This caused a fair amount of slowdown and the Scottish network was apparently routed through the same location so it had an effect on us up North of the border too.

Check the o2 forums and ADSLGuide boards - same thing being reported there by many.
