Any reason not to upgrade to 10?

What I would like to see is, aside from the choice in modern UI full screen vs start menu, is the choice between the standard w10 start menu and more class view of "All programs" like in windows 7. I think THIS would appeal to almost all end users.

This is what disappoints me - it comes so close to enabling users coming from a variety of approaches but falls off a cliff at the last minute - with just a little more imaginative or open/wider thinking on the implementation it would provide functionality that would leave Windows 7 looking positively antiquated functionality wise.

Not sure if it's worth it or not. I'd defiantly recommend you try it in some capacity if possible. You could take an image of your existing set-up, then upgrade, falling back to the image of Windows 7 if needed.

Personally I'm still on 7 as it works pretty much perfect without any annoyances, which I can't say the same for 10. Not that this would apply to you which is why you can only try and judge yourself.

Yea, it's an absolute ball ache if it doesn't go smoothly and you can easily spend several evenings trying to rectify it.

In short, stick with Win 7 for now.

It's been a continual pain in the arse for me, since installing it.

I'm on Z77, which is a couple years old.

Just made a thread about all my problems. Going back to W7 myself. 10 is fail for me.

Been on W10 since release, upgraded without issue and had no perceivable problems at all.
However it feels no different to W7 in terms of performance, smoothness or speed and offers no gains at all to me in gaming or photography editing.

If I had the choice again I wouldn't bother.

I've just bought another SSD for Windows 10 Professional, so now I have a 250GB one for W7, a 500GB one for games installs and another 250GB one for W10.

I like the idea of it being installed and ready if I want to use it, but also like the idea of having a full Windows 7 Ultimate install to fall back on.

So now I dual boot the two. I'll be gradually trying 10 and if something doesn't work with it, I'll just install in 7 and use it there.

W10 seems to run pretty good so far, I quite like it.

Running a Crosshair V formula (non Z) and an AMD FX CPU, HD7870XT graphics card

Upgraded to Win 10 in August from Win 7 ultimate and I have not done a clean install yet.

Overall I am pleased with the upgrade, feels fast and smooth. I quite like the flat look, slightly reminiscient of W2000 before XP came along with all the colours but better and modern.

All my programs and games work as they did before.

I installed my ASUS Zonar sound card this week to use my 'twin RCA /Aux backplate bodge'. Ripping tracks from a record deck. New win10 drivers, no problem.

I will not go back to Win 7 now, happy user.

Biggest reason not to update is TH2(essentially SP1) update is out next week, so wait for that, get the ISO and di a fresh install. Or an update, majority of updates are fine, but as ever some people get major issues.

I've now migrated most of my machines to Windows 10, but still have a couple running Windows 7 for various reasons. My personal feelings after several weeks using Windows 10:

Pros for Windows 10 over 7:
  • Faster boot times
  • Native ISO mounting
  • MUCH better multi-monitor handling (especially wallpapers - my biggest personal annoyance)
  • Task Manager is much improved
  • Device Manager improved to now show disconnected devices by default when selecting Hidden devices
  • File copy vastly improved - now keeps transferring other files when it runs into an issue rather than waiting until you answer the question to carry on
  • Runs well on low-end hardware (AMD E1-1200 laptop with 5400rpm drive)
  • Keyword searching on Start Menu improved - more likely to correctly prompt for the thing I was after

Pros for Windows 7 over 10:
  • Windows Media Centre (I use this as the family's main TV source and around the home using Extenders and Xbox's)
  • Native DVD playback
  • Windows DVD Maker
  • Windows Live Movie Maker
  • More widespread driver support, especially for older/obsolete hardware
  • Granny-friendly - everyone in the family knows how to use it for simple stuff and the complex capabilities are hidden away out of sight

If I upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 will I have to reinstall all my games and applications. Will I need to reformat my 3TB HDD again to be able to use all of it?

Is that only the case on a fresh install?

If you do an upgrade, all your programs and applications will stay and you won't need to reinstall any - provided the apps are compatible with 10 (most are) and the upgrade works correctly (most do, but some issues can occur). You'd only need to reinstall stuff if you clean a fresh or clean install.

Can't see any reason at all you'd need to format your 3TB drive (unless it's the one with Windows on it and you decide to go for a fresh install). If Windows 7 can see it and recognises it as 3TB then Windows 10 definitely will be able to.

Try older laptops, I haven't been able to properly install a Geforce GO 6100 ( or 6150, or 6200, can't remember, either way a mobile 6 series), the Vista driver causes flashing browser windows/rendering problems of websites, and there is no official Win10 driver.

Also on my mums older lappy, radeon X1100 Mobilty, I've had enough problems with finding a Win7 driver, so I have my doubts about Win10. ( Otherwise the lappy is still more than fine T7200 and 4GB RAM, fine for home use).

Also, I still can't adjust the screen brightness with windows, only with my keyboard. ( this on an AMD HD5470)

How does it run better ? Benchmarks clearly show it's not faster in any way at all. It's very slightly faster in some things ( eg. PCmark or other benchies), and very slightly slower in other things (simple things like loading MS Excel or Word).

Looks wise I'm not a fan of the more ''flat'' look. I hated Win 8 though mind. Subjective obviously though!

Step in the right direction, I'm not sure, for the average user, perhaps yeah, all maintenance and stuff is done automatically and better than in 7, but for the power user, I'm kind of annoyed how dumbed down some things ( win updates for example) are. Not having full screen Metro is a major improvement, but other things aren't better imo. Especially all the ''Windows Store'' apps are rubbish, the built in Email client is rubbish, couldn't set many email accounts up at all ( they would receive mails, but not able to post), edge is still inferior to many other browsers, bloody xbox integration ( some of my clients were missing a normal offline ''classic'' version of solitaire or spider solitaire).

On my lappy I don't use any of the ''windows store/start menu'' apps, they do my head in, luckily Office 365 ( and its outlook) still works like it should, because the stock mail client is a joke, inferior to even outlook express from win xp. The multi taskbar is inferior to displayfusion ( no system tray/clock on secondary or 3rd screen). No ability to set an individual rotation of desktop backgrounds per screen.

Drivers are down to manufacturer of the hardware in question, OS cannot fixed everything, remember how bad drivers were for Vista in the early days due to lazy companies.

Both my PCs (one is almost five years old) are working great with no driver issues, but then I pick my companies for my hardware in general ie those with great driver support.

My brother has a seven year old Lenovo laptop and his upgrade from Win7 to 10 went smooth, personally no reason to stay on Win7, security is not as good, life span is on its way out, less features then Win10, gaming wise it has no DX12 support and EOL in 2020 anyway.
UI wise well looks is always a preference thing but not rocket science to make Win10 look nicer, if you want the best looks then you should really be looking at Linux distros.

There is nothing great about Win7 IMHO(ex-Win7 user myself), also if I did not game I would have ditched Windows and gone Linux for general email/browsing and general use(yes I still have two Linux distros on my other PCs).
Gaming wise and general use Win10 for sure.

Windows great strengths are ease of use and gaming, so Win10 is the only option for a PC gamer especially for DX12 and future games.

For any of you with privacy concerns regarding Windows 10 then I can highly recommend Spybot Anti Beacon which is free and does the trick.

On my main PC windows 10 has been flawless, but I upgraded my girlfriend's laptop to 10, it had an issue where the hdd activity would never drop from 100% making the system very slow.

I tried a few fixes I found on Google and nothing worked so I downgraded it using the built in roll back tool, the damn issue continued on 7. So I would say, and it is common sense anyway really, just make sure you are backed up and prepared to format if needs be.

Got to admit I'm still waiting to see fully what Microsoft are tracking with this new OS, anything "free" gets serious suspicion from me. :o

Seems they are tracking more than we thought but still pretty harmless, main priority seems to be pushing bing more and more with cortana.

I will upgrade eventually, just in no rush.

It's hardly pushing Bing with Cortana. Cortana is Bing, it's where it gets all it's info from.
As for the spying it wasn't spying, people went all retarded over a few sentences, that ms have since rewritten to make clearer.
You can also go into settings and turn pretty much everything off, all though it'll break things like Cortana if you use it.
