Any Students??

Second year college, off to do Electronic Engineering next year at Bristol ( hopefully). Done revision for 2/3 subjects, just procrastinating one subject and that can be fixed in the next two weeks at college :P.

I'm thinking of advancing to do my building surveying at Bristol. have you been to the open days there? what is it like?

I know you weren't asking me, but it's a fantastic university in a fantastic city. :)

This. Good courses, well supported by the uni staff, good city to live in. Respected research uni too. I'd recommend the place too.

What're you working on mglover? I'm trying to choose between industry/phd/engd at present, a little worried about researching a single subject for four years.

It's a brilliant city:

Because it's just a truck load of awesome! Like many decent cities, the central area (where the university is based) is divided into zones which are all within walking distance, with the 'extremes' being Clifton (a very 'poe-shhh' and lush area) and the grittier stoke's croft (home of many a Banksy piece and other urban art). Every area has its own persona and cool place to go.

The variety of night life (heavy metal, chart, crazy rave, you got it), recreational activities, shopping etc are all phenomenal. Last year in Clifton I was a 4 minute stroll from a student clubbing area (the triangle), a 20 minute walk from Cabot circus (an amazing shopping centre) and a 5 minute bike ride to Ashton Court for some off road biking (over the suspension bridge).

The thing that really makes it though are the people. The people in Bristol LOVE Bristol - I've never heard a bad word. All the cider / wildlife festivals are packed with enthusiastic students and locals, there really is a sense of pride. I was a student there for 6 years and didn't get bored and many of my friends who have left are trying to find ways to return. It's a very happening, enthusiastic and cultural city. It's just brilliant, I can't wait to go back in September :)

I bet my soul that you will not regret going to Bristol. I am that confident.

:)

I'd be incredibly surprised if there werent a lot of students on this forum :p

In my fourth year of my undergraduate masters in Mathematics at Imperial College. Hoping to start a PhD next year!

There's so much wrong with that statement that I don't even know where to begin.

Also, let's not turn this thread into yet another "let's moan about student loans" thread, they got boring a long time ago. :(

I have actually been there for a Linux course for a couple of days. It's not really a very grand University and completely different to Bristol. It seemed as if 90% of the students were of Pakistani/Indian origin on the course, it was a bit of a culture shock lol.

i think ill just finish of with one word if they really cared they would have gotten out of the "war"

which is damn expensive you know

Why would a software development company employ you over someone with a CS degree?

I would have a guess that the skills from Maths are more suited for some sorts of software development. Where the algorithms made are much more maths heavy where a CS grad would not be as suited.

talk of the town is that a lot of software houses are taking maths/physics students over CS students because their degrees are supposedly 'harder' and it shows they can pick advanced techniques up quickly

(i do CS so this isnt a dig at cs, nor is it at maths/phsyics, not trying to start some sort of argument...)
