anybody find meat adverts repulsive?

They're killed as humanely as it's going to get. A bolt through the head. The bolt going into their head arrives faster than the central nervous system can send the signal that "ow, that hurt". Everything after that is the death rattle.

Now "religious" killing, like in Islam and Judaism, where they just hang the animal upside down, cut it's throat and let it bleed out... that's a different story and takes the animal much longer to die.

In small scale abbotars you may be right, but most of the industrial ones are awful before they even get to the bolting (if it works properly- which it doesn't on all).

Just an FYI, most/all religiously slaughtered animals are stunned in the UK before dispatch, just like non religiously slaughtered animals.

Introduced to the slaughter process at the age of 3 when my Great aunt in Italy picked up one of the chickens in her garden broke it's neck then held it up and proceeded to tell me it was dinner not had problem with meat or how it's been slaughtered since. It's true killing things in a humane way is the way to go IMO however sfaic once it's on the plate it's food you can't go back and salughter it differently so why winge about it.

Nearly every vegetarian/vegan I have known owned a cat or a dog as a pet, and as such made 'allowances' for the meaty chunks that were fed to them on a regular basis. Humans are stupid, and I reckon that all the other animals secretly laugh at us. When we're not eating them, of course.

well ive got a quorn curry with fresh tomatos and spinach to look forward to

I actually don't mind quorn in either curry or chilli and mostly use it instead of mince or chicken.

My missus (doing weightwatchers mind) decided to try quorn sausages and jesus they are the most tasteless things ever, she only had 2 out the pack and threw the rest away.

Adverts for Colgate toothpaste. FFS Colgate, why do you have 50 different kinds of toothpaste? Does your whitening paste not also tackle gum disease? Does your gum disease toothpaste not freshen my breath? Why do you have three different whitening pastes? Who is buying all these different niche toothpastes????!??!

Confused me too. In the end I settled for Oral B pro expert. Does everything.

i don't find them repulsive, no more so than barry shouting at me about cillit bang. the "alright, alright, everythings gonna be alright!" advert does make me mute the telly though.

Venison is lovely, like aberdeen angus cow, with a hint more angus :)

No. And if anything we should be showing people the reality of where their meat comes from. It doesn't magically appear on shelves in plastic wrap. It was once an animal. It was slaughtered. Here's what it looks like on the bone and raw. Get people thinking more about where their meat comes from. Looking at better standards for animal welfare and husbandry.

I agree with this - from a Veggie for the last 20 years

Some time ago, they asked children in London where milk came from - the main answer? "The Supermarket!" :(

pretty much same as me...grandparents were farmers in northumberland

chickens in the yard were for eggs and for the pot

livestock were for slaughter..even the hand reared lambs we knew would end up on a plate

we shot game on the land and fished in the rivers, I still shoot and fish 35 years on. I will always eat what I kill....I do get pleasure from hunting, but its not wasted... ( I am not posh enough or rich enough to get on commercial shoots) a brace of wood pigeon for me is a good feed.

I eat meat because I like the taste. Of the above list of peeves the only one I really "whinge" about is slaughter methods. Yes, animals are going to die, but surely we should do our best to ensure we reduce the amount of suffering involved in that death?
Well, debating which method of slaughter which is most ethical seems to be missing the point somewhat, more-so when in modern agricultural farming a majority of the sufferings is a result of cramped or poor conditions, lack of socialisation & no freedom of movement are bigger contributions towards suffering than the method of dispatch.

If a person is indeed against suffering then making simply dietary changes isn't much to ask for, the reality is most people simply pretend otherwise or just don't care. Both of which are fine, but listening to people harp on about pet causes while ignoring the huge negative contirbution they make is nausiating at best.

It's akin to listening to Jimmy Savile lecture on the horrors or child abuse.

I know it is for Australia Ordering the vegetarian meal? There’s more animal blood on your hands but still interesting...

Published figures suggest that, in Australia, producing wheat and other grains results in:

at least 25 times more sentient animals being killed per kilogram of usable protein
more environmental damage, and a great deal more animal cruelty than does farming red meat.

So rather than suggest that we use humane slaughter methods I should just not care at all and go for cheaper less human methods as the animal is going to suffer anyway?

Why does it have to be such a binary choice?

They don't put me off at all. I grew up on a farm, regularly killed and prepared animals for cooking and spent quite a bit of time in an abbatoir collecting pig brains (which I then hand peeled and liquidised) as part of my degree - often after a skinful the night before. If that didn't put me off then a picture of a cow next to a steak ain't likely to change anything. :)
