Publishers set the prices, not Steam.

I'm don't mind paying a small premium on Steam games anyway. I usually end up rebuying games I enjoy on Steam anyway when it's on sale cheaper negating the price difference. I'm barely saving anything going the cheaper option first, so I may as well benefit from the great features of the Steam version from the beginning.

Using this logic, then. Why do publishers charge up to £15 less if bought from gameplay for example?

I see what you're saying regarding buying it twice, but it's the prinicpal that counts and if people like you contiunues to pay £5-£15 more to buy from Steam then you're just being a slave to their money machine.

No thanks. I'll buy the games, if they're worth it for £2.75, and let Steam make less. Judging by some of the price differences I'll probably still save money buying 2 copies!

I will not use Paypal at all after having them lock access to my account before and several other issues with them. I could get a local bank account but I'm not of a fixed address and will only be here for 6-12 months before relocating again, so it is a pain to have to do this.

The point is their shouldn't be IP based restrictions in the first place.

This ip business is starting to get to me actually.

I think they're narrowing it down to your nearest city now.

Big brother comes to the internet, therefore begins to obliterate what the internet was/is intended for.

It will be like China within 3years.

Steam is freaking brilliant.

One thing that worries me is they could if they wished kill all my games.

I agree.

But when you consider that the publishers don't need to manufacture any discs or cases or manuals and still the price is a lot higher on Steam, then it is for the disc version from gameplay + postage?

Someone is screwing us, and that is what upsets me.

It forces me to buy the disc version because it is just stupid spending upwards of £15 more for the same product.

If you buy the same product elsewhere then it is likely you can't integrate it into Steam, so methinks it's Valve that's making millions for running a few adverts and servers. No wonder they haven't released Half-life 3, they don't have to.

Publishers don't want to harm the physical part of the retail market, it's a big sale area to them, and despite the lower prices, they end up with a bigger cut. Look at all the indie devs skipping publishers out completely and getting the game out themselves through digital sales. Publishers are the middle man, and they don't want to be cut out.

Not only this... but shops tend to set their own prices. Games still have an RRP set by the publisher (which is still generally higher than Steam), shops can still sell it for what they want though.

Oooh yes I'm such a slave to the money machine.

I'm not so concerned about spending a few pounds more. I'm not exactly putting myself into poverty, and I'd much rather have a Steam copy from the beginning. I'm pretty sure I've never paid a £15 premium for any game though. Not to mention that I tend to wait for the superb sales that they have on for a lot of games anyway.

Yeah you stick it to the big bad man at Steam. Fight the power!

I also like owning a physical copy

Couldn't agree more.

I've never really understood why people prefer downloading and not ever really actually owning anything but I guess it's just the Torrent age we live in.

...............Wanders off to the cupboard to dig out a 10 disc box of floppys with Doom written on it..........

I've never really understood why people prefer downloading

No boxes cluttering up the house with discs to get lost or scratched or product keys to lose or get damaged. Some may say "Chuck the boxes away then"... Mmm, defeats the object no?

Also means I can install a 5 year old game without the usual.. Install, download patch/patches, patch the game then play process.

Games just work, without discs with no patches or dodgy .exe files.

I like owning a physical copy. But the features of Steam a worth more to me than a pretty box that stays on the shelf.

If I can have both, (such as with Steamworks games) I will.

the only thing i don't like about steam is how they don't price their games very well sometimes. Some older games are priced far too high compared to shops. Andsometims on launch they price too high too. They should be cheaper, wasn't that the point of digital distribution?

I use it for a lot of my games nowadays, I had reservations to begin with but with improvements over time I can't see any reason not to use it. The only downside for me is the pricing of new releases seems to be over the top, not a major problem for me though as I've developed enough patience to wait for price drops before buying games, I can't remember the last time I had to have a game on release day. Bloody nora! it was probably Half Life 2!

I've taken advantage of a lot of the Steam deals though and i've got loads of good stuff to play with very little money spent, gotta love it for that!

Steam is pretty much a winner for me!

Not every body lives like a pig you know.

I am sure you dont, but either way, not my problem.

If all my Steam games were "boxed" copies, my lounge would look totally stupid with all the game boxes on the shelves. The house is for everyone, not just for me to dominate with game boxes.

Also, even with best intentions, toddlers and daddys game discs = upset daddy ;)

Also, without digital distribution, the Indie scene would be nothing like it is becoming and while at it, producing some better games than the soo called "AAA" publishers.

Funny thing is you guys complain about your prices in the UK... try living in this (Aussie) place. Yes i import most of my games from UK... except Crysis 2 cos i wanna play it real bad!

Australia doesn’t have an R18 certificate for games so cant even DL Dead Space 2 or demo Black Ops on xbox live... Bar Hum-bug to that!!

Yeah, but we'd rather have expensive games and live in permanent sunshine with scantily clad aussie babes scuttling around all over the place!
